I have a question for you guys, I recently bought a Canon 24-70 II f/2.8 and was wondering if I should keep my Canon 20 f/2.8 lens. what are your thoughts?

20 is significantly wider than 24, but really you just have to ask yourself if you will use it. If not, it's only going to lose value sitting on your shelf.

You could probably sell it and get a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 for even money. 20mm is 20% wider than 24mm, but 14mm is nearly twice as wide.

Hi rez example from my honeymoon:

concur with facedodge. Often, 24 is wide enough, and when it isnt, jumping down to 17 usually solves the issue.... 14 is extremely wide, but works too.

Do you value the cash or another lens of similar price more than you do that lens?

thanks for the reply guys.

As for the lens, I think 24 is wide enough for family portraits? I just don't see a 20mm useful as I rarely use it and not often do I use it because its too wide.

Based on that response, sell it.

Honestly 24 is also too wide for family portraits. You still run the risk of perspective distortion at 24 unless you are framing quite loosely.

Sell your 20mm 2.8. Your 24-70 cover most but if you have to get 17-40.

i totally agree with this advice

the 24-70 is my walk-around lens, it's fantastic for everyday's shots

when i needed to shoot indoor and architectural scenes, i decided to buy the 17-40

the one you can sell is your 20mm

I have the 17-40L just for that reason. Got mine refurbed for around 500, totally worth it

+1

I sold my 16-35L II because it was way too much money tied up in that zoom range when the 17-40L IQ is just as good, has a wider zoom range, and it's >1/3 the price used or refurb'd. I bought a refurb'd 17-40L after selling the 16-35L II. Both lenses are a bit soft at the edges under f/4 but for what I shoot, mostly landscapes @ f/4+, it's sharp enough for me.

I was about to say, maybe in 3 yrs, my next lens would be either a 16-35 II or a 17-40 L lol. maybe they'll come out with a better wide lens in 3 yrs, who knows. I just sold my 20mm :D
