For a while now, it has annoyed me that a good handful of people on this forum basically post each photo a minimum of 3 times on the forum in different threads. They will make a thread for their photo (or series), post their photo (or series) in the camera model thread, and post their photo (yes, again, or the entire series) in the lens model thread. They might even get crazy and post it in all the different theme threads that it fits into as well. I'm tired of checking the threads I am subscribed to and seeing the exact same last post in each one.

I propose that this be disallowed on the forum. I'm sure I'm not the only one who believes this.

I, for one, try to post each photo only once in the forums. I am sure I have slipped up, but if I have taken a series of photos, I sure as heck don't post the entire series in every thread that it applies to.

What does everyone else think about this? Am I the only one?

I remember a previous discussion where it was suggested that 3 times was the limit. For instance it would be acceptable to post a shot in the lens thread, the lighting thread, and in the camera thread but thats the limit.

I've been guilty of posting the same photo in a couple different threads. I don't do it all the time and I don't think I've ever taken it to that extreme. I usually wait some time as well. If you think it's bad here, you should look at the flickr groups.

I think it's already a rule anyways.

You are not the only one. It grows tiresome seeing the same photo, or worse - series of photos posted in every category that is remotely applicable. In addition, when commenting on a photo it is also good manners to "quote" only the title, image number or photographer as opposed to relisting the photo or series page after page. All of this just wastes space on the server.

I don't see a problem with the system potn has in place now. If coming across an image multiple times annoys you then put those posters on your ignore list.

This is a photography forum where images are often posted and shared multiple times and the more limits and rules that are made the less people are going to post and visit.

There are some excellent photogs here that only post their stuff in certain forums, like the lens sample forum. I'll visit that forum just on the chance of seeing one of their images. But those folks who don't visit say, the TS-E 24mm f3.5 II sample thread will miss some outstanding landscape images that don't get posted in the landscape thread. So I'd prefer it if folks would post in both. Although I agree, if it's a series of images, one should be more judicious with posting.

I will second the dislike of incessant reposting of images via the Quote button, though. I've seen threads where the same image or images were reposted 7 or 8 times, filling page after page. That gets old. Especially when someone reposts directly below the original image, so you have the same image in consecutive posts. It's easier to just start your comment with ^^^^.

An image can fit many categories eg a B & W candid image on a streeet taken with a 5Dmk 3 and 70-300 can fit at least 4 categories and in fact, likely more. I don't have a problem with anyone posting their images in whatever category they fit as not everyone will be subscribed to the same threads. I only get to see them repeated if I am subscribed to all those categories and if I've already seen 'em, how hard is it just to press the "page down" key?

I agree with all that. Quoting a great long text post in its entirety when replying to one or two points in it is annoying, too. It wastes everyone else's time and hogs the bandwidth. But just try enforcing that one! People quote excessively on other boards and in e-mail groups. The usual request from mods is "Please clip when replying," and the usual response is to ignore the request. People are lazy.

I don't look at lens forums. I follow several content forums and see too much repetition of images from one to another, and another, and then another . . .

What I post in Competitions (the colors game, the A-Z game, The Photo Below Me) has usually appeared in another thread, such as Urban Fragments or G-15 Photos. This is probably not a problem. The Competitions forum has only a few viewers at any time.

Not everyone views every thread, so I have no issue with photos being posted in multiple places where they fit.

I am on board 100% with banning those who quote and thus re-post sets of images. Very annoying.

Well I do not think there will be any rule against this other than the general rule "do not spam the forum and just post the best of the best of your photos". Moderators will only take action in extreme cases and these would need to be reported otherwise we may not see them.

That said. I am guilty of this. Not posting the same photo 10 times but I have certainly posted the same photo(s) in multiple threads if I felt they fit in more than one place but I ususally wait a certain amount of time.

As for banning reposts in quotes. That is never going to happen so live with it until the new forum software eliminates that "problem".

As for " hogs the bandwidth". No it does not. A photo is only downloaded once then the cached version is used in subsequent posts.

In Image Posting Rues https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=51022

under IMPORTANT READING

> Do not post the same image in multiple forums or in multiple posts. The end result will most likely be one of the threads being deleted by a moderator.

> When quoting posts that have photos, please take a minute to remove the [IMG] tags, or just remove the reference to the photo altogether. There's no reason to have the same photo quoted time and again in a thread.

I am not sure these are rules or just guidelines, they are both ignored quite a lot.

I believe the forum is so big and so naturally people "inhabit" small sections of it that genuine reasons, as others have stated above, to post in more than one forum are valid. Particularly if the post is in another thread e.g. as own topic and in the "Best sunset" or "rate the photo above" or "next colour". I think this should be kept to a minimum, done only occasionally and rarely more than one repeat.

^ I try to delete the IMG tag if the image I am commenting is on that page or the previous one. If it's buried in the thread, I don't mind reposting with the image.

The only time that multiple instances of the same photo has been approved is in the Critique forum (specifically requesting critique) and in the appropriate Share forum, because they are different venues, with different audiences, and different (likely) discussions.

And even in that case, Pekka recommended it be done via a link, like this: in the critique forum Please comment and critique the photo I have posted in Share/Birds forum - https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1310198) Thanks!
