Fong just wants to milk rich hobbyists for everything he can, having the "latest and greatest" diffuser. Learn how light works and get a product or two from B&H and you'll be well ahead of the game.

this looks interesting. is it really something gary came up with?

one definitely has to test in order to understand the benefits / drawbacks (of any on flash diffuser).

the biggest benefit of using the LSPJ with internal dome in the strait-up (towards ceiling) mode, is that the internal dome reflects light evenly out the sides, or towards your subject for example. this fills shadows that would normally come from only bouncing the light off the ceiling.

in some test shots i've posted somewhere in here, there is a perfect example of this. my friend is sitting on an armchair with his hand on the armrest. his dog's head is resting on top of the hand. the hand has the fingers spread apart. with bounce flash, the dog's head cast a shadow on the hand/fingers such that you cannot see back to where the fingers meet on the hand. with the PJ and dome, the shadow is minimized and you can clearly see where the fingers meet the hand.

another less subtle example from the same picture, is the pipping on the chair he is sitting on. the pipping casts a strong shadow with bounce flash and with the PJ and dome, there is no shadow, or it's barely perceptible.

The 580EX with its built in white card will do the same thing. So will the Omnibounce. So will a 420EX with a piece of white card stuck to it with a rubber band.

exactly... i recommend testing with anything first. for me, that meant having to buy a PJ and i also bought a lumiquest 80/20. it's just plain fun!

in fact, i should also mention is that in some of the testing i've done with the PJ, without the dome, pointed strait up towards the ceiling as compared to bounce flash (strait up) without the PJ, the results were indistinguishable to me.

So are you supposed to use the dome when bouncing? Or is the dome used only for outside fill lighting purposes? My PJII comes in tomorrow so I hope I didn't just waste money that could have gone else where! Blah!

And, more power to him, but not from me.

I got 3 products from B&H, LumiQuest's 80-20, Westcott's Micro Apollo Softbox and SBM's Supreme Flash Diffuser. I also sometimes use multi-flash and therefore more than one of the above at at time. The first two fold flat and take up almost no room in my bag. I have not tried the LightSpheer but it just looked like a different spin of the same 'ol, same 'ol.

I think that new Lightsphere is hysterical! I don't know if anyone will take me seriously with that on my flash. People just might stare at it and not the lens and I'll have strange pictures with people not being able to stop staring at it. :)

No one took me seriously with the *original* LSII on my flash. They called it Skeletor, Peanut Dish, or more affectionately, "What the f*ck?!?!"

Between the white globe of death & Bigma and the XT with grip...not to mention the flash bracket on occasion...I was a helluva sight.

LOL :) :) :)

I take mostly events and portraits of children. If I saw you coming, and I was a little kid, I'd probably run screaming to my Mommy! :) Great stuff.

It probably looks like a soul-sucker from their little POVs.

"Mommy is that thing going to steal my dreams?" *whimper, cry*

Two weeks later, screaming in the middle of the night.

"Mommy! Daddy! It came after me again! Can I sleep with you guys?"

"I see Fong people."

LOL AGAIN! :)

You have got to take a picture of you with all that gear. I'm going to have to do that too when I get my bracket this week. Add on that umbrella helmet reflector from the other thread and we've got something!

I tend to agree with you, and your photos demonstrate it well.

Can't blame Gary for constantly improving his product. I've learned to wait a few weeks, even months after product announcement because there are occasional "specials" that discount the products, as well a riding over one product hype or two before buying, if at all. Hey, maybe I can find some kind of material to transform my LSII Portraitist into a cloudy Lightsphere, and get the same result.

Fill it with whipping cream! :p ;)

I got stuff for taking pictures. :o When things are unclear - It's time to refocus.

Yeah, I mean, whatever he does with his LS in the privacy of his own home is nobody's business but his, if you know what I mean.
