Took these this afternoon in the backyard. Male and female. I was playing with Auto ISO, so I could keep a set shutter speed for a little wing blur, and the f-stop I wanted for DoF. Worked well. The first one went to ISO 250, the second to ISO 400.

Great images I like how you have shown the sense of movement in their wings and everything that needs to be sharp is. Well done.
Stuart.

Aw Gee-just when I was getting over hummer fever! Excellent shots, Moose. I'll wait 'til next summer and try again to reach that level.

Yes. Different species are more common during certain times. Right now I still have both Anna's and Costa's. The Anna's may leave soon. Black-chinned are here briefly sometimes, but I didn't see any this year. I've seen Rufus on two or three occasions in the 10 years I've lived at this house.

We've had Costa's nests from spring through well into the winter. Unfortunately, the winter one was destroyed in late December/early January (and the babies were gone). I can't believe the mother could have successfully taken care of them for long anyway, with the scarcity of insects.

Interesting ... This year in contrast, we had at times so many insect's that it was impossible to be outside in some places without being covered with netting ( bug coat ) , way into the fall.

We to have some species that never leave this area summer and winter even thou it get's down to -30 -35 Celsius....-22 -31 Fahrenheit. There winter plumage must be a great insulator.

I think I would head south!!
