Just wondering If this is even a viable option, or one that someone might even consider ?
Or maybe its too early, not sure.
Is it too much of an equal trade, or is it more for a person who is more interested in video?

The 70d was just introduced and not many used ones being sold. At $1200 new, I would guess if anyone is selling one it would be around $1050-$1100. On the other hand there are quite a few
used 7d's being sold, $700-$850 range. I wouldn't consider a 7d for 70d being a even trade.
Features for video on the 70d outweight the 7d, with liveview autofocus.

Nope.

My two 7Ds still serve me well.

I don't want to have to replace around 20 Compact Flash cards with SD cards.

I'd miss the 7D's Spot Focus and Expansion Point Focus modes, though I don't use them a whole lot.

And I don't shoot video with my 7Ds, so while dual pixel focusing and the articulated LCD would be nice for the limited amount of Live View focusing I do, they aren't really a game changer for me.

I want the quick to use rear control dial on my cameras. And the joystick.

I wouldn't mind having the improved version of Micro Focus Adjustment (40 lenses vs 20 lenses, dual adjustment for zooms, lens specific adjustments), but it's also not a game changer for me.

I'd like to have more than 3 frame bracketing, but that's more important to me on my full frame camera, than on an APS-C cropper.

I don't know the shutter durability rating of the 70D.... haven't seen any claims by Canon yet. But traditinally the xxD have gotten 100,000 click rated shutters and the 7D has a 150,000 click rated shutter. Plus 7D is more metal clad, seems more durable, may be better sealed against dust and moisture. 100% 1X viewfinder (vs 98% .95X) isn't a big game changer, but the 7D still wins out there, too.

Built-in WiFi doesn't have enough range for me. I'd rather use a WFT module that gives more like a 100 foot range, if/when I need remote control and wireless file transfer ability.

So I'll wait for the 7D Mark II.

Not a chance. I need the superior autofocus of the 7D for stills mode, and I never do video. I like the control layout much better too.

If you use the spot AF and expansion modes a lot, I can perhaps understand "superior AF" on 7D. Otherwise (speed, accuracy) it's at least as good as the 7D's AF.

I am switching from 7D to 70D. Currently I own both and testing them side by side using both thorough test shots and real-life shooting. My 7D is going to be listed for sale soon.

As for the control layout, having owned the 6D and now the 70D, I am actually lost on my 7D which I've owned for over 3 years. The joystick is great but it's just a matter of muscle memory. Now, when I occasionally pick up the 7D, I am much slower operating it than my 6D and 70D. Weird, never thought this would happen :)

Wow after seeing some of your Phenomenal shots, I'm surprised. Did you do all your nature shots with the 7D ?
If so the 70D might just be my next camera as well, since I shoot mostly Landscapes,Seascapes and wildlife (when I can find them that is !)

Thanks. Yes, I'd say 70% of them were taken with the 7D, except for the ones taken within the last 3-4 weeks.
Sometimes I even use my 6D for wildlife when the light is getting low.

If i didn't have a 7D I would pick the 70D over the 7D just because of the few improvements it does have but as I have already invested in the 7D, those few improvements aren't worth the cost difference between selling the 7D and swapping to a 70D. They are just too close in specs to do that.

Yes, I bought the 7D purposely because it has those features (and a few others) - I find them vital. If I used video or live mode the 70D would be a nice choice - but it couldn't replace my 7D for everything.

I would not pick the 70D over the 7D. 7D's Spot Focus, Expansion Point Focus, Compact Flash cards, joystick, metal body. The tiny improvements will not pull me away. The only camera is the 5DIII once it drops in price in a few years. Honestly if Canon gave out the coding on their cameras all cameras would be able to do so much more and we would upgrade less.

CF card, Joystick, metal body are "features" that are not very important to me. If anything I actually welcome the reduced weight. Do people really believe that the 70D or the 6D will just one day crack open because it is "only" constructed of aluminum and polycarbonate? :)
I have not heard of any reports of people's 70D (or 6D) destroyed which otherwise could have survived if it was made of magnesium.
Joystick is good, but whatever you get used to becomes second nature. No big deal for me. Cards - I have a ton of very fast SD cards already.

on the other hand I will take the improved IQ both in jpeg and RAW (especially the much friendlier nature of shadow noise, so much better to work with in ACR in post.); the "minimum shutter speed" feature in Auto ISO in AV, an excellent feature when shooting events; the AF microadjust that works for both ends of a zoom lens to name a few.

Bang for the buck a refurb or gently used 7D is still better, no doubt, so that's what I usually recommend to people, but to me the improvements are worth the switch.
I also shoot video more and more often.

Yeah, good question. I did because alongside my 6D I need to have an APS-C canon for my wildlife shots. I often shoot at mid-ISOs and that's where the better ISO performance of the 70D starts to show over the 7D. Again, the amount of noise is only a little less, but it's the deep shadow noise that is much cleaner, no ugly specks like my 7D.

I also mentioned a few other features that drew me to the 70D, and I knew I was losing some features, the trade-off, even in still photography, was worth it to me.
