Hi All!

I tried doing a search but somehow the search engine came up with other threads that weren't related to my problem... or I didn't do too thorough a search:o hence the new thread...

Am quite new to RAW... had a few pics this afternoon, viewed them using the Canon Viewer Utility, and they really looked fantastic. Then I decided to try the "Extract to TIF" button, then deleted the pics from the CF.

To my horror  and dismay, all the extracted pics were severely under-exposed!!! Is this normal? I've tried rescuing the pics using PS but none have come near to what I initially viewed when they were in RAW...

Geez, talk about learning the hard way...

All help appreciated :-)

John;)

If you haven't ritten to the CF you still can rescue the RAW files from the CF. There are SW like Imagerescue that will extract he file from your CF. Next time don't delete the CF before saving it to the HDD. W/ RAW files you can adjust the Exposure after the fact and also the WB. These are some of the most important part of shooting in RAW. The other mportant part of shooting in RAW is that because the file is not closed in have full control of how you want it.

dgcorner,

Forst off with RAW you should never delete the original RAW file as that holds all the capture information. FIle Viewer does just that, and it can extract a basic JPG or TIF image but does hardly any post processing - I am not surprised they came out wrong. For RAW, unlike JPG< you usually need to tweak the image. Try DPP if that came with your camera.... you have a 20D so it should have. Otherwise download Rawshooter Essentials for free from pixmantec.com. Plenty of users of that one around here.

First thing you should do is transfer the RAW (.cr2 file on your 20d?) to your Hard Drive as lostdoggy says. Then you can post process it.

Lostdoggy & EOSAddict -- thank you very much for your input. I will try your suggestions for the future -- formatted the CF so I have nothing to rescue at this point :-(

I knew that I should have just downloaded the RAW files onto my HD before doing anything else... but I guess that's why curiosity killed the cat ;-)a

Cheers!

You still can rexcue them after you format. Low level format just alters the FAT but does not over write the files.

Thanks LostDoggy -- found Digital Image Recovery (free) software and it managed to reconstruct my "lost" pics quite well.

Sometimes, we have to learn the hard way, don't we? Thanks again for all your help!

Cheers!
