Hi Everyone,

I was recently contacted with a strange usage request. They want to use one of my pictures in a Canadian TV show. I have no idea what to charge. It's an aerial photo that would be hard to get anywhere else. They want all kinds of rights -- worldwide all media perpetual. What do you think?

Thanks

Dave

The Canadian Television market is not the same as the US market. it depends on the show really as to what is reasonable. My day job is in the Canadian Television Industry, if you want to PM me the name of the show I can maybe give you some insight into them.

If you are referring to simply a still image that they want to reference in the show, the questions of relevance to the show will dictate the price they will pay for it. If it is hard to come by footage that will cost them a bunch of money to shoot themselves then it holds more value. The questions is how much would it cost them to go shoot the same footage/photo themselves.

Without knowing specifically what they want I will assume a single image used on a Network/Cable broadcast that is seem worldwide.

Here are a few quote values I get from my fotoquote Account at 100% market value.

Non-advertising photo use on a television show on a non-cable network. (Does not include news programs.) - $1500

Still image used in documentary broadcast video produced for a television network (cable or non-cable) - $4482

remember this is 100% market value, and you are not likely to get 100% market value in Canada, since the true market size is much smaller than the US (even though they are asking for full rights).

Still these would be good starting points.

Again, if you want to PM me the specifics I can run a more accurate fotoquote for you if you want.

LOL... I got this far before I realized the photo was not of a shoe. I was wondering what kind of aerial photo of a shoe you had.

No, I never claimed to be outstanding in the field of photography. I said I was out standing in the field taking photos.

20 grand?

Can't they just pay for a helicopter ride for one of their Cameramen for much cheaper? You can get Helirides around cities for like $100 these days. Maybe $500-$2000 would be a better range.

I had a similar issue, where a company that produces a show for History Channel contacted me regarding the rights to use a photo of mine in an upcoming show. When I inquired about the going rate for using a photo, I was told that they were working on a tight budget and could not pay. Really? Tight budget? I was told there was the possibility of getting photo credit on the show in exchange for the photo. Sorry, photo credit as nice as it is, especially on television, does not help buy cameras or gear.
