Holy Moly, I casually clicked into this thread, read the first couple posts and immediately thought of you Jeff. And here you are!! I had to leave a "bokeh" thread a while back cause I just couldn't take it!

lol,you left cause I asked you what bokeh was and all you could say was that it was subjective, lol. :)

Christ, what's so hard about just showing this picture of 50s and qualifying it.

One aspect of good bokeh is closer to perfectly round. It's easy to qualify this crap.

For one thing, the Zeiss article on Bokeh tells us that the shape of the out-of-focus highlights is a very minor issue in the discussion of bokeh characteristics! :) There are many other factors that weigh heavier in the various bokeh characteristics.

I specifically said one aspect, not this is all bokeh is. I was simply pointing out it is easy to start quantifying the subject.

You can go onto the street and show people 2 photos, one that is technically sound and the other lacking, and people on the street will agree the technically sound picture is better. They will also agree that it's subjective and unmeasurable and art, or whatever other fluff words you put in their mouth.

The reality is, if I can predict which picture they'll like by proper framing, exposure, etc then it's quantifiable. Just because most people on the streets are ignorant of those technical terms or how they apply doesn't mean we can't quantify them.

vengence, another issue with bokeh is what looks 'bad' in one circumstance can look 'terrific' in a different circumstance. The point is the subjectivity is something not easily quantified. Like the user i/f of the T3i...some hate it, some love it...so what did that prove?

Timeline of every out of control thread:

1. Noob asks question.
2. At some point, person A makes complete AFU response.
3. Person B corrects person A and is 90% correct, makes some irrelevant poor choice of words.
4. Person A, who is incapable of admitting fault, concentrates on the poor choice of words.
5. Downward spiral.

Stats:
Person A and B are almost certainly not women. Thus person A and B are dudes. These dudes do not know each other in real life because dudes that know one another would never pull this crap with someone they know. Women on the other hand save this BS only for those in their lives that they are closest to: ie significant other.

I knew I would be famous some day. And the great thing is my bokeh isn't explained by gibberish about being subjective. I demonstraight it with actual threads, and I can teach you to do it too, lol.
