How's the other aspects of the IQ on the Tammy in comparison? Color, contrast, bokeh. All that other fun stuff that's just as important.

I think colors are great no problem there.
"Onion" bokeh can be a problem is some situations, although having owned the lens for about 6 months I still haven't had to fix a photo because of that (and it's an easy fix should you encounter onion bokeh).
But the 24-70 II has onion bokeh also to some extent (I've seen examples but again very rare), that's just the nature of these lenses.

AF is admittedly slower; I have the Canon 24-105L and it is faster than the Tamron. Odd thing is that the speed difference is fairly small on my 6D, but larger on my 7D between the two lenses.

AF accuracy of my copy is very good, no problems there.

I made an posted a video comparison of the AF speed (various combinations of tamron, canon lenses and the 6D and 7D bodies).

the tamron has a slight yellow cast. Microcontrast is better on canon. bokeh, I am not really sure. I have not found either objectionable, but I have not specifically tested for it. apparently, canon is a lot more flare prone (lenstip test I think)

Thanks for the feedback gents. I've already made my purchase on this one but it's always nice to hear as much as possible about lenses you know? :)

Good thread guys. Helps educate me on the differences between the two lenses. I ordered the 25-70 ii because there are some great promos going on right now. But I really do want that is feature. I find it pretty invaluable on my 25-105. But I guess we'll see. The other hing is I'll be shooting a lot of my kid and she's going to be moving around pretty soon and I definitely need some quick AF to keep up with her.

Ilumo, I still have a love hate relationship with the tamy. when the focus is right, its great great lens. I still reach for it for video. However, sometimes I feel I am fulfilling Einsteins definition of insanity when I use the lens.

so you never kept the 24-70 II? yea, that's the only thing that's going to irk me with the 24-70. lack of IS. although, most of the shots I've been doing, the bottleneck hasn't been the IS, it's been the motion blur, and IS is probably not going to help me with that. However, a standard zoom with IS for video would be invaluable. sigh. if canon came out with a 24-70 IS, it would be so much easier. even if it were 25% more than the current 24-70 II, I think it would still be worth it. with street prices of the 24-70 hovering at $1600, paying $2000 for the IS version would be very doable IMO.

I have both. I will send the tamron in to see if the focus can be improved. I will put it up for sale if it cant. its a shame, b/c its very very sharp, hand pickd out of 5 copies.

Won't happen. The current lens will stick around 1800-2000 and the IS version will be about 2700-2800.

Right now there is sales/rebates and such. This will go away.

you never know. the 24-70 II has been trending down, similar to how the original 24-70 was. Whats to say the 24-70IS won't do the same. but we'll see. I'm excited for the new lens to come in so I can put it through it's paces. will be nice to have a high quality std zoom again though.

You can take 10.000 photographs with Canons 5D Mark III...
Being the Very Best of All Pro-User with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom...

At every single place at our planet with all kinds of everything as light...
the sun... just a candle... a lightsystem from a concert... anything...

Some photos will be great with that Canon... some will look better with Tamron...
And it is a matter of taste... some folks will ALWAYS buy Canon.

If money is NO problem ? Don't think twice its allright : Buy Canon !
But if you like to save some get Tamron... and have 99,99 the same lens for less $.

It could be sharper... just a button in Photoshop or Lightroom...

Removed the image, because some folks are talking just BS about Tamron.

2X Canon 1Dx, 2X Canon 5D Mark III, 2X 24-70 f2.8 II, 2X 70-200 f2.8 IS II, 2X 580EX II, L-24mm, L-35mm, L-50mm, L-85mm, A Mack truck full of Pro-Photography stuff, A bunch of Malinois to protect and serve. A Hummer to go where i want to go, to take photographs....

Oh boy i did forget to make it sharper for the wanna-be-pro's...bw!

How sharp would U like to have it ?

Even with your canons you don't use a pic. right out of the cam !
Because if you would... it wouldn't be pro-like.

Reminds me the Intel vs. AMD topics... (CPUs)
...and the NVidia vs. AMD topics (GPUs).....
