I am probably paranoid in that I back up to DVD (2 copies) and store off-site. However, I was just looking back for something on DVD and kept getting the message "This programme is not responding" when I tried to access a particular folder. Could it be that the folder contains too many images? Help!

Are you using a mac?
On a pc i would try restarting the computer.
If that doesn't help try to scan the dvd with scandisk (if you have a pc) to see if there are any disk-errors.

What programme were you using to access the DVD? Win Explorer? As above, try a restart... if that doesnt work try restarting in safe mode

Thanks for the tips. I'm using a PC.

I store on an external hard drive at home and that doesn't have a problem. Only when I put the folder on DVD and then try an access it does it not work.

There are some limits to the ISO file system used on DVDs and CDs, I think for example there is a limit on how many nested directories you can have and a limit on the absolute (ie full path) filename length...

Is it like this on both copies? If not, it's more likely a corrupted disk. I've had this happen.

The disk is probably corrupted. I've had this also.
Do you have a second DVD-reader to try?
Most often, when I can't read a DVD in the Reader, I put it in the Writer and that one can read it (sometimes...)

It isn't a disc error - it happens on 3 dvds I have made. I've also tried it on a couple of DVD-readers in the office - to no avail.

So I had a brainwave and thought that if I could copy the files from the DVD to my laptop harddrive.......

"Cannot copy ****: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"

So I've googled that and am more confused than when I started. Help!!! :(

Sounds like a disk error to me. I ran into that once, I found a freebie utility that I was able to read the files back to my HD (IIRC, ISO Buster). Fortunately the trashed files were in a HTML index of the disk.

Since the files are on a DVD, by default they will all be read only.

If you were trustly paranoid you'd have two copies offsite on hard drive, you're much less likely to lose data that way. I don't trust optical media for backup of important data.

I doubt that this has anything to do with this particular problem after reading through the thread, but thought I'd just throw it out because a lot of folks don't know this. The root directory of ANY media can have only so many files (and I have forgotten the number) on it. You could have a 10 gigabyte drive and it will say that it's full when you've put too many files in the root directory (folder) - regardless if the drive is 95% empty. This goes for hard drives, CD's, or any other media format.
