 Still have the helmet. Will pass it down to my daughter. But since he's going faster, got him a more secure helmet, one that fit quite a bit better than the bunny helm. :D

I have a 4 stop ND from Hoya I use. Sometimes that's not enough depending on how bright it is outside.

I used to strap a 3-stop ND filter over the lens. But since it's not summer yet, though I do live in sunny SoCal, it's been okay at 1/8000s. Some photos are slightly over-exposed, which is easily brought by reducing a stop in post-processing.

You got 5D bodies so you can shoot at iso 50 and you should be okay for the most part. But keep in mind that iso 50 is not a real iso on Canon bodies. The camera basically calculates how much it needs to reduce by taking the image at iso 100 and converting down to iso 50 specs.

There are other ways to skin the cat, naturally, up to you.

I wonder if I could bother you 50L users for a minute... (I posted a similar query in the main lens forum but didn't get much of a response)...

I remember when this lens first came out, people were up in arms over the back focus... Do you folks grapple with this? Do you just avoid situations where it comes into play? Do you have a work around (e.g. move back slightly after focus) or did the latest bodies like the 5D3 reduce the impact of this at all? What's the current situation with focus on this lens and back focus that can occur when stopping down at short distances?

For the first three months I had this lens I both loved and hated it. Back focusing is an issue at close distances and the camera would miss focus regularly. I considered selling it. I shoot with a 5D III and changing the focusing screen was not an option to assist in manual focus. I did try adjusting the micro adjustment in the camera but never quite got it right.

I bought Focal software and calibrated the camera to all my lenses. I saw improvement across the board, but the 50L was the biggest improvement. Now I get consistent focus and hardly ever miss a shot. Make no mistake, this lens has a razor thin area of focus when shooting wide open which will take some time to get used to shooting. Properly calibrated you can nail focus where you expect it - on a subject's eye for example in a tight portrait.

It's a great lens with a very special quality. Probably my favorite lens on the Canon. Many people have had no back focus issues. If you find you do and your camera has micro adjustment you shouldn't have any worries.
