I was helping my son with his photography assignment to show an item in motion. He wanted to do something with a baseball so we set this up in the garage. We had a work light with a reflector to light the ball during it's travel and had a speedlite on the camera set for second curtain sync to freeze the ball at the end. We did a lot of experimenting with different flags to keep the work light and the flash off of the background. Once he got all the setup done and tested with the digital camera he made the assignment shot with film.
The ball was suspended on fishing line that is attached to a wooden dowel that we ran along the garage door track to keep the ball running straight. The ball was paused briefly in a couple of places while being lit by the work light. It was a fun exercise and made for some good father/son time.
