Question about Fees - Wire feed / Sporting Event Coverage

This is not a "how much do I charge" question, as it is more a "how does it work" questions.

Here is the deal. In 2015 we have Women's World Cup Soccer hosted in my City. I know that shooting for the big news wire services is likely out of the questions as they already have people here.

Talking with a couple News-wire guys they suggested that once the draws get set, and we know which teams are playing here, to contact news outlets in the foreign countries, as they are less likely to have someone coming, and see if I can shoot for them.

Sounds like a great idea, While I get the fee structure for news-wire, I am not sure of the structure of direct contacting a news outlet. If say, Zambia were playing and I contacted the National Zambian newspaper, what fee structure is expected? Do I shoot and they buy what they want at $50-$100 a photo, is it a fee for all photos? just not sure.

Hate to start contacting outlets without understanding the structure. Anyone able to share some perspective?

They will probably give you a flat fee of a couple hundred bucks to send them all the pics.

Basically, they'd get you for a day rate.

Okay that was what I was thinking. Each would likely have their own rate I am assuming, or do I offer up my day/game rate?

Also is this usually an exclusive thing? or could I be shooting for more than one outlet at the same time?

Chances are, the World Cup will make photos available to those people. However, it's always worth a shot.

It will probably be cheaper for them to buy them off the cheap ass wire services.

I agree it would be cheaper, but the wire guys I was talking to indicated that some of these games likely won't get much if any coverage by the wires if one of the teams is not a powerhouse.

so worth a shot I guess, what's the worst that happens if I ask.... not like I haven't heard no before.

+1 to this. A friend of mine is a professional sport shooter and she works as described above. She contracts with a newspaper in a teams home country and then makes sure to shoot them during the tourney.
