Wondering what it is (but sure it won't be cheap!).

Sorry this should have probably been posted in the rumors section.

I notice that the web page has been removed - a Google search for "Profoto Off Camera Flash" lists the same missing web page.

From what I remember reading on the missing web page:
- something Profoto has been working on for four (4) years now
- rolled out at some photo trade show in October 2013
- publicly announced in November 2013
-

This time it looks more official for an early November launch.

New Profoto B1

Off camera with TTL
No cords
10x power of a speedlite and 20 flashes per second.
I am afraid to look at the price but this will change a lot of things.

Looks very good. I've been reading up on it this morning. Looks to be around $2k. Now only if it would work with my 600ex flashes, do high speed sync, and be able to quickly set ratios, then they would have a real winner!

This not be cheap!

From LR:
Available as a kit or a single head, the B1 500 AirTTL will be carried by Profoto dealers worldwide. One head, charger and bag will set you back £1,295 plus VAT. Add on another £260 for the remote.

However, I'm still interested in finding out what it's all about relative to cheaper non-TTL or multi-vendor/component systems.

Profoto B1-500 AirTTL:
http://profoto.com/b1 (external link)
http://profoto.com …flash/b1-off-camera-flash (external link)
http://profoto.com/us/b1#b1-video (external link)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj4FggI_cSU (external link) (21:12 minute product video)

Areas of interest for me…

PROS:
-greater light power (useful for certain applications) than say the Canon Speedlight 600EX-RT (which are very convenient & portable).
-the NEW Profoto Air Remote TTL-C product http://profoto.com …ash/item/air-remote-ttl-c (external link)
appears to be an improvement over the existing Profoto Air Remote, in that it is able to display (feedback) as well as control the light from the top of the camera.
[rather than having to count/guess from a power base point (say of 4.0), or having to walk over to the light to see the power level display, like a user has to do with the D1Air-500’s; which I find is a real inconvenience - thus currently somewhat defeating the purpose of remote operation from camera top!!]
-obvious portability & Profoto Li-Ion Battery provides 220 full power flashes per charge.
-fits existing Profoto light shaping tools/modifiers etc. (yeah)
-Profoto Backpack M: http://profoto.com …cessories/item/backpack-m (external link)

CONS:
-hmmm… only 3 groups/zones?
(4 or 4+ groups would be helpful; prefer like the CANON ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …peedlite_Transmitter.html (external link)
- approx twice the price of D1Air-500’s! $1,995.00 USD
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …Search=/BI/6857/KBID/7410 (external link)
http://www.adorama.com …f-camera-flash-first-look (external link)
-still bulky (a sacrifice for increased light power)

Interesting - time will tell; someone else go first please, thank you…

as a wedding shooter, it seems like it's still too much to carry around. I've been having a lot of luck lately with 3 600RTs through a shoot-thru umbrella, mounted with the westcott triple threat. I'm able to hit about f16 iso100 at about 6ft. Not sure I need much more... I can deal with slower recycle times for the ability to use canon's reliable wireless system, and add flashes for background lights, etc at a more affordable price.

So it's a 500 watt second monolight that has a battery pack on the light, does ETTL, and can have a fast flash duration......but no HSS and going to be expensive.

Is it just me or does anyone else think this thing is getting way over hyped as a "game changer"? My take on it so far is profoto is just trying to get a section of the strobist crowd. While it looks great and, since its from profoto, I'm sure it's going to be a damn fine light, But at 2 grand I'd personaly rather get a couple cheetah cl-360 lights!

Like I said, might just be me though.

Agree. “Game-changer” is a relative term that depends on perspective. Perhaps if a user/person’s lighting system(s) is based on the “head+pack” model and been lugging that lighting model around for decades (such as Profotos other than the D1’s), it probably would look like a game-changer.

So far I’m with DELSOL9400/Joe on this announcement…
For on–location, love the Canon 600EX-RT’s individually or on a tri-flash mount.
(however the D1Air-500’s are a delight & lots of precise extremely responsive fun for studio applications)

An individual preference and what works best for each of us. Photographers are so fortunate there are so many wonderful tools to select from.
So often less is more and the human eye the greatest asset.

For me, the fact that the intro video showed them shooting bikers in a quarry identifies the market for this light. On location advertising and editorial where dragging packs, heads, power supplies for monos etc. meant more people and more time for setup. And then all the test shooting to get the exposures set.

ETTL solves the exposure problem, built into the unit battery solves the power pack problem. 500Ws is reasonable amount of light without over taxing the recycle time and battery.

There will be a lot of these in the rental shops. Hopefully, that's where I'd go for them the one or two times a year I might need one. As said, a couple of CL-360s on a Phottix bracket delivers the same power, along with FP-sync which is probably more useful than ETTL. (Yes, I a devoted 600EX-RT ETTL shooter said that. :-) )

Exactly, this IS NOT geared toward probably 90% of people on this site, but more toward the full time working commercial/editorial pro whereby not having one or two assistants will be save time and money which in turn would allow them to purchase several of these puppies…..
