G11 Dial Question

On my Canon G11 the ring dial (containing MF, Macro, Flash, and Timer settings) doesn’t appear to work very well when adjusting things fluidly. For example, I cannot use the ring to adjust manual focus. (Instead the manual focus “meter” sort of goes up and down randomly even when moving the ring in the same direction.) I get the feeling that my G11 is broken because I tried a G12 and had absolutely no issues with the ring dial. Is this normal for the G11 and if so, how do I manually focus?

Mine seems to work okay, maybe it is worn from usage?

I think it must be broke if yours works correctly -- so you can confirm you can use the back dial to adjust MF (from infinity to macro) in MF mode?

Could it be that dust or some other foreign matter got in behind the dial? I would use a can of compressed air to blow around the dial while moving it. Shut the camera off first.

This has been an issue for several folks with a G11. Mine is still working fine, but others have discussed it on and off since 2010. Here's a thread on DPR with a person's recommended "repair" option.
