Beautiful results with that combo Tim. How far away were you from the flower when you took that shot?

From the focal plane mark on the camera, to the subject, it's about 10 1/4 inches....best as I could measure.

A Canon 50mm macro will give you around the same distsnce albeit without any additional glass added in front that may impact IQ.

Given the likely size of this flower and magnification achieved in this picture, does it qualify as a macro (>1:2) or even close up (1:2 to 1:4)?

TSDevine's 'blue flowers' shot reminded me of a similar one I shot some time back. I am trying to attach a photo (first time ever, so not sure it will upload properly!) to show what a Canon 50mm macro does at closest focus. The flower's diameter is about 15mm. The frame is 36x24mm. Exposed at maybe f5.6/8, hand held; the flowers are more magnified and the bokeh is quite pleasing, lending it the necesssary closeup/macro effect - I think....! With an extention tube one coud go closer.

The aim of this is to show what a Canon 50mm macro can do.

And I found the answer to my question too.

That looks an awful lot like Brisbane to me. How are you enjoying the river city?

Your right! Its Brisbane, I´m staying here until June, visiting my gf since she goes to school here ( last year ).

Its good ( HOT weather ), but I hate not having a car to get around for doing seascapes, waterfalls and shooting the milkyway. But I enjoy the city and street photography :)

Not sure the max focus distance, but for small flowers the combo is hard to beat. I'm guessing 2 feet or so maybe is the max. For this shot, maybe 15 inches?

Thanks Tim.
