Last week I had the chance to play around with the Sony A7 camera for a few days and then decided to return it. It really is an amazing camera and I will eventually pick one up when I have a job again. But for the time being I can only look at pictures from other people and and from Sonyalpharumors and drool.

I decided to purchase it from my local electronics store after trying it out while I was in Vancouver. The only other cameras I had to compare this with was my Fuji X-Pro1 and Fuji X-E1 which are based on the same technology. And let me tell you it felt like night and day between these cameras, granted the X-Pro1 is over 2 years old now and technology can changes a lot in such a short time.

The speed at which this camera operates was extremely responsive and amazingly quick. I only used the Sony kit lens and I had no issues with focusing or taking an image. Even using the focus peaking mode where the image you are trying to focus on becomes highlighted with either white, blue or red was such a treat. For me, I was shooting in raw mode, but had the screen set to black and white with focus peaking and the magnification turned off and it felt so natural and quick. In controlled environments I had no issues nailing focus. Also, when using the electronic viewfinder I did not notice much or any lag, even in low light.

Compaired to the X-Pro1 and X-E1 this camera is a clear winner overall. It was nice and small as the X-E1 and was very feature heavy. But sadly my time with it came to an end. The reason why I decided to return it was due to the fact that it was still an expensive camera (if Sony is willing to do another 600$ price drop again I would be in line for one), I actually want to purchase the Sony A7s when the time is right, but will eventually settle for the A7. I now own the Fuji XT1 and this camera actually suprised me. It`s on par with the Sony A7 and has a built in timelapse (the video is posted on the Fuji thread). I really love how this camera handles manual focusing compared to others and actually ordered some cheap lens adapters for my M42 and Nikon F mount lenses. I don't really care for the auto focusing lenses that are coming down the road but I'm sure they are all amazing performers. I was actually surprised by their 28-70 mm kit lens. And really, the Sony A7 is such a good mirrorless camera. Mirrorless cameras really are something else.
