I can't remember where I read about this, but the Zebra function is pretty cool. I have my a7R set to RAW+JPEG. I then set the picture style to neutral, Adobe colorspace, and -2 contast. Turn on Zebra 100+ and I pretty much have live highlight clipping indication in both the EVF and LCD. If you set the camera to auto ISO and shoot in manual...you can basically use the exposure compensation dial as a brain dead way to shoot...looking for the zebra patterns and adjusting accordingly. (You can also use the technique in Aperture and Shutter priority.)

In any case I'm really liking the Zebra concept so far.

-Tim

Thanks for the tip.:D It seems to work pretty good with the few test shots I just tried.

Ideally Canon makes a 46MP camera with a shooting speed similar to 5D III - that would also be great for bird photography. :)

the question is even (or when) canon supplies high MP camera can they match sony sensors on noise and dynamic range.

Will they finally remove the AA filter?

Will the fix the banding, shadow noise when lifting shadows, Canon has A LOT of work to do then just raising the MP.

They have fallen on every aspect of sensor tech.

Cool; what new lenses are in your plans (if any)?

I'm keeping 24L II, 85L II & 100L only. No need to zoom for me any more
I'll add Zeiss 1.4/55 1st - I like that 55mm 'what you see, what you get :)'.

Love the shoots from you & Tim / tsdevine, keep up the good work!

"The" Fred Miranda on the Fred Miranda site is using the TS-E lenses on the a7R. Would be good to read his posts over there. He had to add flocking to the Metabones III to cut down on reflections.

-Tim

And he had to go through a bunch of adapters to get one that was well-enough aligned to get sharp results shifted. Seems like a bit of a pain, but worth it if you need to use the TS-E with a 36MP sensor. But, the adapter is clearly a weak-link in the scenario, and is why I'm hoping Canon makes a high resolution camera soon.

Good fair questions, I too would guess that they will come up short, but if they can give me the megapixels I can work around the other shortcomings like I already do with my 5D III. When tripod-shooting I shoot at ISO 50 and use mulitple exposure cheats to gain all the DR I need, but when it comes to an architectural shot with the TS-E lenses I can't manufacture my own extra megapixels (can't do shifted panos because the shift is used to straighten the verticals), so I need Canon to make me a high resolution camera.

And if they make something like a 46MP (or so) sensor it will still easily outresolve a 36MP sensor AA filter or not, so I'm not worried about that. The banding? Yeah, Canon better fix that! :)

Rumor has it that Novoflex is working on an adapter....should be interesting to see what options there are in a few months. My Metabones works pretty well though.

Hey guys, found a pretty good review of the A7R and a bunch of exotic 50/55mm lenses.

Seems like the OTUS is the King on the A7R for those lenses in this test.

Thanks to the reviewer for this helpful info. :)

Just a silly test shot using the Canon 600EX-RT on the a7 (manual mode). Lens is Zeiss 1.4/35mm ZE.

^ This time I try my 580EX in manual mode again.

I need to set my a7R also in Manual mode including ISO, which work perfect.

With Aperture mode will be over explore 2-3 steps for me.

Coincedently, I tested my MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 plus AC3 on my 580EXII yesterday on manual and it seems to work fine. At least it fired every time. I didn't spend any time taking any real shots with it. I'll see if I can today if I have time.

Hello tsdivine!
Not sure those reviews you offer are valid comparison. Put that 50/1.4 Canon lens on a 2013 Sony A7 sensor for a more equal comparison (Not a trashy sensor by Canon circa 2000!) Moreover, most of the differences that come up in optical bench tests are virtually not discernable to a naked eye viewing images on a compuer screen.

I am sure there are some folks here who own both these lenses and will be happy to offer us side by side results using both the lenses on the same subject shot under identical conditions.

Also, a lot of today's Zeiss is not German glass made in Germany. Zeiss sub contracts and licences stuff all over these days, incl to the Far East. That's like buying a Merc made in China.... May as well buy a Cosina!

On most forums, I percieve people seem to spend endless hours comparing lens quality without half as much thought to their photographic skills and talent. For example, the difference in DOF of a 50mm 1.4 and 1.8 or even f2 for that matter used wide open for purposes of street and general photography is almost neglibgible at 5 to 10m shooting distances. As for picture quality, it is almost the same. The minimal difference in light gathering is amply made up by today's high ISO range cameras. Only bokeh may differ, not sure how much...

That said, your personal choice/preference is what it is, I have no issues! If you are happy with a particular lens and its results, matters not what others think! But such comparison as you suggest cannot be considered justification.

Happy shooting!

I've been using a 580ex in AV with a7r and its been working fine.

The flash doesn't affect how the camera exposes the ambient light. If the shot is overexposed, simply turning turn the speedlight's output down until your subject is exposed properly.
