Question:
When comparing the 85 1.8, 85 1.2 and the sigma 85 1.4
which one has acceptible AF speeds?

I have read that many people here use the 85 1.8 for auditorium sports (e.g. bball etc) and it got me thinking about the relative speed of the 85 1.4? I understad that the 85 1.2 is slow to AF - though it sure has the power to produce some gorgeous "pop"...it would not be the best choice for faster moving activity.

If the sigma has acceptible AF responsiveness _ i may wait for the upgraded one (hoping that there will be one) so as to be able to use the dock with it for the fine tuning.

thanks for any insights.
p.s. I don't necessarily need it in the next couple of months

Thanks. i was wondering however... if the 1.4 is fast enough to catch both portraits as well as some faster activity....

If you're shooting sports or other fast moving objects then the canon 85 f/ 1.8 would be your best choice of these three. The auto focus and speed makes it deadly accurate when shooting with it on a body such as a 7d.

My sister, the professional baker and cake decorator once told me that my camera takes great pics. My reply was that I thought her oven baked great cakes.

Although I didn't find the 1.8 blazingly faster than the Sigma, just slightly so on a 5DIII, it was noticeably faster than the 85 f/1.2L on the 5DIII.

I found the Sigma fast enough..for portraits, kids..etc. Sports…yes..I think you could shoot sports, but more glass in Sigma than Canon 1.8…so the latter would have less glass to move in shorter time, so..I'd look at 1.8 if I were doing sports and portraits.
