How do I know when something is in focus on 70D in video mode?

This is an issue for me. When choosing to shoot video it cuts off the shutter and I cannot look through it and see the green dot in the lower right to judge if I am in focus. The 3" LCD does not give me a good enough indication of whether I am actually in focus. The only way I can find is to pre-focus by zooming in on the LCD (magnify button) and manual focusing that way. Or by using AF then turning back to manual focus to prevent AF hunting (people moving in front of other people for instance).

Preferably I would like to have something to tell me when I am on the mark. Am I missing something?

One other thing. I don't see any option to add 'safe' borders to the display for widescreen 2.35:1 framing?

No borders that seems strange since you get them on the 7D, time to consult the manual methinks. The 70D focus follows from what I've read so once you've tapped the screen on your subject it should stay in focus.
