This is a re-edit of a shot I did at the local RR museum using the new Nik Analog Efex Pro filters. Comments welcome of course.

I think it looks best when viewed large on the Flickr page.

Nice shot. I'm wondering why the left side is out of focus or blurry for some other reason.

Same here - it jumps out at you. And strange artifacts in the clouds -- one wormy looking one at the top right of the leftmost set of telephone poles. Did you spill some beer on your sensor?

Just playin' with the new Nik filters.

The blurred edges, vignette and grunginess are part of the analog efex filters. The idea is to emulate an old wet plate photograph. I think it looks more 'natural' when viewed large on my Flickr page to me.

If you're trying to emulate the wet-plate photograph era, you might want to check your history books to find out if they had street electricity back then. Otherwise, you might want to think about getting rid of the utility wires and poles.

I think it looks pretty good. Joe's right though if you're trying to be authentic to the time period, but I like what you did with the processing.

Thanks. Aside from realism, I thought it turned out well and shows lots of mechanical detail, especially when viewed large (like on my 27" monitor). I just need to do better historical research next time.

I like it, but do agree that for authentic oldness it would help to clone out the modern signal poles etc.

As far as historical research goes this engine spent more time running in Ward Kimball's
backyard than on the Nevada Central Railway. Ward Kimball was a avid train collector and
railroad buff. He collected and operated both toy and full size trains had 500 feet of track
in his backyard to run subject engine and a few others. He and his wife named all their
engines this on was called Emma Nevada, he acquired it in 1938. Ward was one of the
original animators for Walt Disney.

:D I think the research was in referrance to photographic techniques but yes, Ward was quite a train buff.

Here's a different angle, this time showing more of the station behind the locomotive. The name on the sign is from one of Rod Serlings favorite episodes of the Twilight Zone, "A Stop at Willoughby".

The locomotive can be seen at the Orange Empire RR Museum at Perris, Ca.
