Well after reading these threads for the last couple of months, and finding myself way short on focal length this weekend on a birding trip, I put my order in last night. Hopefully my tax refund gets here before the lens ships...

I got a chance to feel :) this lens at my local store. Boise being not a big town we have only one camera store that I know of. The sales rep there was nice person and allowed me to take few shots with this lens. To my surprise, this lens is HEAVY. I tried my friends 100-400 L before but this felt heavier that that. I would definitely need Monopod or Tripod to hold this steady. Also, the zoom ring is long as other people have pointed out. on my other lens, I can zoom from wide to tele in one rotation of hand. If I get this :D it would be steep learning curve to get used to all these unfamiliar features.

I personally cannot handhold the Tamron at all, whereas, while I used the 100-400 on a monopod I could get away with taking it off for more freedom of movement I do have very bad back and neck issues. So for me the Tamron might as well be the 10lb 600 4.0L(but a lot cheaper)...learn to use tripod or monopod all the time.

Yeah, it's noticeably heavier than the 100-400, but I don't personally find the weight that bad at all. If you are trying to hand hold it for like 10-15 minutes straight, it might get shaky.

I noticed right away that it was heavier than the 100-400, but I got used to that pretty quick (I don't find the 100-400 to be too heavy to begin with). It does feel a bit more unwieldy, however, when manually focusing, since the focus ring is so close to the body.

I had a strange thing happen with my Tamron yesterday. I was taking images of a bird on a tree branch and while firing a "burst," I noticed the images from the beginning of the burst were fine, but then subsequent shots were extremely overexposed. I thought this was odd, since I had already set my exposure/settings for this particular spot, and the lighting hadn't changed. I checked my settings (unchanged) and took a few more shots --- same thing, very overexposed. I turned the camera off, then back on and everything was normal. I'm wondering if something was up with the aperture blades...? It was fairly cold (20s) outside, and I'd been out for quite a while when this occurred. I shot with the lens for the remainder of the day without any further issues.

I apologize if this has been covered recently, but is there any word on Amazon availability in the future??

I spoke with a customer service rep. yesterday and she was unable to provide any information regarding the availability of the lens.

One of the reviewers at B&H says the same.

.....I thought it performed well until it started to over expose my images for 1 1/2 to 3 stops. .....

Yeah, see posts 3237, 3238. That review (2 star) was referred to. I thought that may have been stuck blades, too.

Thanks. I'll have to monitor this issue -- hopefully it won't return. Otherwise I've been very satisfied with the performance of the lens.

Yup. That was me wondering how a lens could overexpose..
I wonder what would cause the stuck blades. Did Nikon sold their (sticky) oil stock (used in D600) to Tamron..? (And funded D610 manufacturing cost from it?)

I was out in similar temps last weekend and saw no such issues. Hopefully it was a one time event for you!
