Nice review, and awesome shots!! Nice to see what the lens can do with some decent light. :)

Thanks for the link.

Well after reading these threads for the last couple of months, and finding myself way short on focal length this weekend on a birding trip, I put my order in last night. Hopefully my tax refund gets here before the lens ships...

Congrats!

Dang, thanks for the info though!

Amazon is not a Tamron dealer. All the Tamrons sold through Amazon are either sold and shipped direct from a dealer or just sold by a dealer and just fulfilled by Amazon. With limited availability of the lens right now, I doubt any dealers have surplus stock.

They are very good photos, and I don't say that lightly. They are obviously in focus, or very close to it, but the images being sharp at this size does not mean that the lens itself is sharp. It is trivial to make a sharp 0.5 to 2MP web image from an 18-22MP original of mediocre sharpness.

There have been at least two dealers using Amazon, but only for hours each, and shipping directly to the customer from the dealer. The first was Beach Camera on 1/17 (that's where I got mine, when they had 3 left), and then there was another place a few days later.

Awesome field test review I am glad that the reviewer admitted that he is not into lab test or pixel peeper and I feel the same way not that I don't like the lab tests and I am thankful there are people doing it. It's a good tool or guide for consumers. But I'd rather have a field test reviews and some pictures along with it. So for me this is an awesome review and thank you for sharing. This is just my opinion.

Quite nice real life shots in this review. He says AF is quite good but then this is mentioned:

It can be tricky to focus moving subjects due to a combination of the third party AF

That guys getting nice images at 6.3 as well. I have been shooting usually at F/8, but maybe I'll try shooting wide open again or at 7.1.

I find AF to be accurate and consistent, when it is achieved, once MFA is applied. It sometimes just goes "duh", though, when it is set quite different than the current subject, even with the focus limiter engaged, moreso in AIServo than in one-shot, and moreso on the 7D than the 6D (once I changed the 6D custom functions for AIServo, it stopped going "duh"). Both cameras seem to want about -7 MFA for the lens at 600mm, and is more consistent than any 3rd-party lens I've used, except when it goes "duh".

Here's hoping that the 7D replacement works better with AIServo, has less and finer read noise character like Sony APS-c sensors, and faster AF up to f/8.

In his video he also showed his way of holding the lens to help stablize. I think I am going to try that out, it's time for me to use my 3rd party grip with my 7D again and try his technique.

My copy is just plain soft at 600 and wide open. Good light, subject close enough, solid support, fast shutter, remote or timer, doesn't matter - if it's fully zoomed and fully opened up, it's gonna be soft. With mine.

Have you verified if you need to adjust the focus? It takes two to tango - both the lens and the camera can be a bit off. And the depth-of-field is very narrow so very little off is enough to get a soft image.

Unless the lens is completely out of focus, or has a lot of motion blur, you should be able to make very sharp web images from it.

The major differences you see between lenses, between the same lens at different f-stops, and between different camera bodies pretty much disappear when you downsample images to be web-sized (of course, the definition of "web-sized" will change in the next years with monitors getting larger).

My shots at 600/6.3 on my 7D look a little soft at 100% pixel view on my low-res laptop, but downsampled to fit the 2160 pixel height of my 4K monitor, and sharpened just a tad, they look stunningly sharp. So do most of the full-res samples we saw early on that were questionably sharp at 100% pixel view at 600/6.3.
