That is why the Tamron lens has my attention. Tim Definitely, everyone has different needs... and what makes sense for one may not make sense for the other. Budget, shooting style and personal preference all coming into play. All my comments in this thread coming from a perspective of wanting the best possible quality at the long end of the spectrum. It was perfectly still, allowing for a long exposure to get the waterfall blur in the background. All I had was a 55-250 at the time. Yes, almost any other bird and it wouldn't have worked. Great shot. Wild Birds of Europe

Then you are in the wrong thread, and should buy one of the big white lenses. This is a thread who looks for the best budget option. And that's why I'd be interested in this lens and how it compares to whatever Canon comes up with as a replacement to the 100-400. The 100-400 is old. And has kept the price for a huge number of years. The price here in Sweden is about 25% lower than when I bought it a number of years ago - thank you currency. 5DMk2 + BG-E6 | 40D + BG-E2N | 350D + BG-E3 + RC-1 | Elan 7E | Minolta Dimage 7U | (Gear thread)

This is a thread who looks for the best budget option. Don't think I'm in the wrong thread, not when part of the discussion I've been responding to dealt with the merits of this lens vs. lenses some of us already own and use. The 400 f/5.6 in particular. Budget is important, obviously. But it's not the only topic of this thread. At this point, we don't even know what this lens will cost... But be prepared for a huge price increase if/when Canon replaces it. When I bought it, it was about 65% of a 300/2.8 Mk I. Consider if a 100-400 Mk II would be magic, but 65% of the price of the 300/2.8 Mk II. No doubt. Flickr

It was a 92 second exposure! I was playing with long exposures, and was surprised to see him show up in my shot.
