After looking at one of my videos I took in video crop, I think it was part of some heat distortion. You could see the shimmering going on.

I can see how that will affect things when we are shooting at these longer focal lengths. Especially on a crop sensor, which ends up being more like 900mm on a full frame.

I see heat distortion when I am shooting surfing and I am lined up with (hot) sand in between me and the water. I have learned to avoid this by being as close to the water as possible on warmer days. Obviously this is a rather specific situation but I have noticed the heat distortion as well.

But I saw this when using my 400mm 5.6 once in a while as well, so I know it is not lens specific. I assume the reason we all bought a lens capable of 600mm was because we wanted to shoot stuff far away haha

does anyone know if the newest batch of lenses will have the firmware fix?

I'm wondering the same thing.

I'm considering buying this lens from one of those ebay sellers from Japan. Of course I'd pay a premium, but I don't know how long I'd wait for a US retailer to get some in stock.

If you are ready to pay premium, why not try amazon (external link) instead.
The lowest I have seen is $1299 (mostly from Wolfe Camera)

I get / see heat distortion when I am shooting across paved roads , lots of rocks / boulders , cars / trucks [above about 80 degrees] . I shot flowers - maybe a bird . A little breeze helps , but knowing what and where to look out for it helps . I carry a blanket [In the truck] and spread it out sometime to cut down distortion .
Getting higher also helps - like pulling truck over onto shoulder and standing in bed - make sure lens is close to side [don't stand in middle of truck]
BTW shooting from shade across road does not help .
The amount of water [mist] in air also can cause distortion . Like at a beach compared to a lake / pond .

Yeah, I normally shoot from an elevated platform over the lake, but in a calm area/inlet.
There are a ton of lily pads now, which may trap heat/cause some of that too?

I'll probably be out there again today/tomorrow, so I'll see if I run into the same issues.

Thanks for the info. I did see some abberations as well when I rented the 400 5.6.

I tried amazon already. Only used available. Wolfe's is out of stock. Of course I'll try checking back every day.

It was just there 2 days ago for $1299 from Wolfe.
Your other option is newegg. They have just recently started taking pre-order (else it was notify only). ETA shows 7/11

I got on the list at our local camera store (a real camera store not a big box).
It took two weeks and I have mine. Price was $1099. I am checking it out now.
They had a Nikon version, too. Overland Photo Supply in OP, Kansas.

Is that Wolf Camera, or Wolfe's Camera? The latter is a single-store operation in Topeka that several here have bought this lens from at retail ($1069). I suspect that you are talking about Wolf Camera (associated with Ritz), which I would not be surprised to see charging a premium to take advantage of the supply issues.

EDIT: Well, I guess I was wrong about Wolf Camera. Their website says that they have the Canon mount in stock at $1069, shipping within 7 days. I don't find either Wolfe's or Wolf at Amazon, and I doubt that Wolfe's is selling their stock on Amazon, since they have been selling them at MSRP.

I am not sure which wolf(e) it is, but is sure is a "wolf" .. :p

(Edit; As I remember it, it was Wolfe... the chain store. It comes and goes and hence you may not be able to see it.)

I just checked their web site and it says out of stock. Unless the store has a different one.
They used to have a store in Overland Park, Kansas, too.

It is confusing! It was wolfcamera.com (not the store in Topeka) that indicated it was in stock earlier today.

Edit: just checked and they still say they have it at $1069.
