Tamron developing 150-600mm VC USD lens

You need to keep the 70-200. The 150-600 is way too big and heavy for general use at the wide end - it's a lens that is only meaningful for people who do need lots of reach.

Yeah, that is also my thoughts. Well, and I guess that's my worry about the 100-400. I rented the 70-200 2.8 IS II before, and it was pretty damn hefty, compared to my 70-200 f/4.

Which is also basically the same weight as the 100-400.. BUT, i was holding it in my hands for 2+ hours straight. Now I have a black rapid type sling/strap, and it would make it much much easier.

But yeah, as you said, I wouldn't want/need to carry it around all the time. Actually, I usually end up using my 135 F/2 most of the time, and figure out compositions, or just use my iphone as secondary for now.

I found over the last year, the vast majority of shots I take are either 11-18MM, a chunk between 70-200, and most of those being at 70 or at 200. I rented the 300 F/4 + 1.4x extender, and took alot with that setup as well.

If you are looking at 400 5.6 or the new Tamron waiting will cause you to lose the Canon lens rebate going on now till 1/4 unless it is extended.

I just want this thing for airports.... it should rock the runway shots if it does not suck.

Yeah, looks like there is a $120.00 Rebate through tomorrow....

I've seen alot of great images with that lens, and it sounds very nice. Although being stuck at 400 might be difficult to track BIF I'd think, if too close. But, having the prime lens sharpness and AF would be great. Also I bet it takes the 1.4 converter quite well.

It isn't enough to produce it in China to get it this cheap - the manufacturing country can't do magic. Tamron have spent a bit of time keeping down the costs during the design stages too.

In decent light, it should be able to. F/6.3 is supposed to be within its specs.

for 1069 I wouldn't care. I think in 2 years the used market will be around 650-700 making them a remarkable deal when that time comes.

Or they realize they have a real winner and raise the price to 1500 shortly after so the used market stays around where the new prices are at now.

The 5D only works to f/5.6 however, I'm sure this lens will report f/5.6 to the body s all the other f/6.3 lenses do so yes, it will focus.

Agreed; i found this to be major PITA with the 150-500OS. Without holding it all the way out (not easy on a 16" long lens), it would creep back to around 416mm at anything steeper than about 75 degrees.

I am surprised that Canon and Nikon haven't implemented this in firmware yet. Sony's A99 has this firmware feature and can be used for all Sony lenses, even the older Minolta lenses. The advantage of a firmware focus limiter is that you can set the upper and lower limits to whatever you need. The hardware switch has some benefits but why not implement it in the firmware anyways for more flexibility.
