Tamron developing 150-600mm VC USD lens

Wow this looks really good especially for the price, looks like Tamron have gone for Sigma's approach with the pricing, just as Canon begins to push prices even higher these two are surprising everyone with prices that are even lower than before!

I could really be interested in this lens to replace my 70-300mm L which I only own because I got sick of trying to find a decent copy of the 10-400mm L

I like my 70-300mm a lot and it was fantastic on the first copy but I do yearn for more reach. The recent samples from the Tamron are better than anything I ever got from the 100-400mm after trying 5+ samples both new and used! This lens looks like it would give me better IQ and an extra 200mm reach! I doubt if it will be as good as the 70-300mm IQ wise though, it's a really good lens and a bit underrated by some.

I haven't found a single copy - decent or not - of the 10-400 L. But sounds like an excellent travel lens if I can just find one

Dam I promised the mrs no more lenses but this has me very keen!!!

I won't be pre-ordering this, but I will nab one when they're readily available and do some comparisons with my 100-400; if it can readily produce equivalent images wide open it will be a keeper for sure. The extra 200mm far outweighs the limited aperture to me.

As soon as I get it I will, I will put it to the test and compare it to my current Sigma 120-300 2.8 OS + 2x TC rig.

Before I bought a 2x TC III for a 70-200II I spent some time looking at comparisons with a 100-400L, and it seems to swing either way (I believe there's quite a lot of sample variation with the 100-400L, so there were many conflicting reviews).

That said, the AF speed on the 70-200II does seem to take quite a hit with a 2x TC, so I could readily believe a 100-400L would be much more usable combination in the field.

The 2x TC III with the 70-200 f2.8 II is capable of sharp captures. One of the first reviews showed it holding it's own against the 400L f5.6, which was surprising. But at the long end the 100-400L still, imho has the edge over the 2x combo. And yes focusing speed does take a massive hit as does focus acquisition in low light.

If the lens is as good as we think, (image, focus accuracy and speed in good light) the only draw back will be its size and weight. Won't fit in a normal bag attached to the body. And it weighs about a pound and a quarter more than the 100-400. Walking with this lens for about 8 hours is going to be a little tougher. Checking out the ThinkTank Digital Holster 50 for when I need to put it away.

I would preorder it but something tells me that it'll be available and not sold out.

AND I really want to see what your results are You will be the ONE person who I would trust the opinion of. End of story

I will be closely monitoring the reports of all of you early adopters and be right behind... about 6 months behind!

Just think of the cash you'd save if the Tamron ends up being as good as the Sigma with a 2xTC...with that cash difference you could buy another really nice lens.

But, maybe you use the Sigma "bare" more than I think, but either way, can't wait to see comparisons in a few weeks.

That's why I strongly encourage as many of you reading this thread as possible to rush out Jan 17 and get this lens. That way, we will also have some high quality copy-to-copy variation data on hand.
