As soon as I get it I will, I will put it to the test and compare it to my current Sigma 120-300 2.8 OS + 2x TC rig.

can't wait to see/hear your thoughts gabe as I'm trying to NOT spend the money on the 120-300 right now and I'm going this route instead for now (preordered already). I do have a canon 70-200 2.8 II IS and I've been thinking about a 2.0 TC for it. The price of the tamron and the canon are pretty close to the 120-300 though, so that option is still a consideration. I use the 70-200 for weddings. I could use the 120-300 for those same situations and it still gives me 2.8 so it's basically like choosing a one lens with TC option -vs- 2 lenses for 2 different uses (but both are lighter and I wouldn't have both at once).

The focus will be very slow with the 70-200 F2.8 II and a 2X
IQ is OK if you stop down an extra stop

any lens combination that does not require a TC is a winner
such as Tamron 150-600

Just think of the cash you'd save if the Tamron ends up being as good as the Sigma with a 2xTC...with that cash difference you could buy another really nice lens.

But, maybe you use the Sigma "bare" more than I think, but either way, can't wait to see comparisons in a few weeks. :)

Yeah, that's going to be the big question... I use this lens often as a 420mm f/4 (shoot it at f/4.5 usually). So I'd have to give up some aperture.
It's going to be interesting, regardless. Unfortunately, my favorite bird targets are virtually non-existent this time of the year.

One comparison with the Sgima 120-300 f/2.8 OS plus x2TC that I do even without having the lenses, is that it's maybe x3 more more expensive and weights more than 50% more. These two things are simply not worth having a 600mm for me, which is why I don't have a 600mm lens yet. In addition the Sigma would start at 240mm, which can be significant sometimes. I guess it makes sense if you already have the Sigma combination or want to add a lighter option, etc.

The comparison with the Canon 100-400mm is good but still tricky, because it's 50% more expensive and it's 400mm instead of 600mm. With the x1.4TC it's more or less similar but "slower" and costs about double.

A long telephoto lens is simply not worth these compromises to me, but the Tamron 150-600mm has compromises that are good. I think it's likely that a lot (if not most) of the potential buyers of this lens have a similar approach.

Here's another example off the Tamron Facebook page. First the photo shot @ 600mm then the 100% crop. Not bad imho.

The 100% crop is a png for some reason not jpg, still looks good though imho.

I'd embed the images but without the shooters release to do so I won't.

This lens will not more expensive than Tamron 24-70? Tamron 24-70 costs about 1150 USD in Vietnam now

I wouldn't qualify anything that's come out yet as "very good", but they look decent.

Not that simple - Canon have managed to put up lots of terrible photos when presenting new gear.

The 2x TC III with the 70-200 f2.8 II is capable of sharp captures. One of the first reviews showed it holding it's own against the 400L f5.6, which was surprising. But at the long end the 100-400L still, imho has the edge over the 2x combo. And yes focusing speed does take a massive hit as does focus acquisition in low light.

Agreed. It definitely needs to go down to f8 (and I find f11 gives a worthwhile improvement). So, when you consider that, plus the slowed AF, I would be very interested to see how the Tamron fares for the same focal length range. Anything over 400 (that's better than cropping @400mm) would then be a bonus from my point of view.

Camera, some lenses, too little time, too little talent

Glad to see someone else has seen things the way I have. While I really would love to get to 600mm without dropping some serious cash, I just haven't seen the IQ I would want to do that.

For Canon lenses, I must pay at least 7500 USD to reach the focal length 600mm but still can autofocus with not-1D series body (EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS II USM + 2.0x extender)

but with this Tamron new lens, I can reach that focal length with just about 1300 USD , quite attractive, waiting for its performance reviews

And I must wait for Tamron 150-600 performance reviews to decide to get it or Canon 400 f/5.6 and Canon 100-400
