I'm tempted to put my 7d and 40mm pancake on a glidecam for some purely hobby level video footage at sporting events I'm already participating in.

What would be the smallest, best for my budget option to do this?

I've been trying a blackrapid strap, hand held at the point of tension, but I'm wanting to get a little more verstile.

This is purely for fun, I'm not too worried about dropping big money on something yet - if I enjoy it and do more, then I'll pick up something much more solid and expensive.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

+1 on that. I've got one and used it with my 7D and a hired 10-22 and it was great. Takes a while to get the hang of it but it's a good buy.

I had this 'stabilizer' before. I was not able to get it balanced, because I could not make the bottom piece to turn and stay. The weight would swing it back to its original position. I was able to balance the same camera on a merlin within 10min.

The Flycam Nano looks interesting, and not bank breaking for a toy - I hadn't run across the ebay option before - it doesn't look terrible in the youtube reivews ...

It does take a while to get the Nano balanced. But there's plenty of YouTube videos to help with it. Another thing you may want to purchase too is a better quick release plate, the one that comes with the Nano is plastic & in my eyes horrible at keeping your camera secure.

I got one of these from Amazon and does the job perfectly, Giottos MH652 Quick Release Adapter Plate (external link)

I'll be another to +1 the Flycam, don't remember which variant I have as it's been a while since I whipped it out. Didn't break the bank and was an effective stabilizer/glidecam alternative once balanced (which can take some patience especially with the flycam). The other thing, be ready for an arm workout if you plan to do any extended shooting :p

Also going to chime in about the 40mm, a bit long for flying but still possible to do it. Just isn't anywhere near as effective as a wide angle for action flying depending on how you're planning on using it.

if you can spend a little more, look at the monocam camera stabilizer. It's essentially a monopod and a steadicam in one.

Have a look on Youtube, there's millions of videos with examples of glidecam work.

But this one shows you the operator's shadow and him holding the glidecam.. it's shows you how smooth the footage can be when using one & moving at the same time.
