Hey guys.

Im going to hong kong at the end of the year and i would like to buy a new lens for the trip

I currently shoot a canon 6d and loving its iso capabilities.

The problem is i dont have enough reach. I own the :

Canon 50mm f/1.4
Canon 17-40 f /4

Im really looking to the

Canon 24-105 f/4
Or
Canon 24-70 f/4
Or
Canon 24-70 f/2.8 mark I (used)
Or
Canon 85mm f/1.8

Which do u suggest i buy and why? Im not only using it on this trip. I would use it at church and concerts.

Any suggestions will be really appreciated.

God bless

honestly for reach and considering you already have up to 50mm covered have you thought about one of the many 70-200's?2.8's (or even the f4 canon version) both the sigma and the tamron's are very good bang for your buck. you can probably get the tammy (which is the better of the 2) for around the same price as either of the 24-70s that you listed.

Thanks. But isnt the 70-200 too long for travel. Its hard to travel with that and i cant use that ONE lens for the travel. What do u think? Im planning to get the 70-200 in the future though. I would need a mid range now for my travel.

85 1.8 seems like a good way to go. Adds something you don't already have in two ways. Doesn't spill into a future zoom that you're after either.

Very best,

you're only taking 1 lens? I would have seconded (sp???) the 70-200 since you have a 17-40

I think the 70-200 is way to big for a vacation. I would go with something like the 24-105. It covers a lot of different ranges and has IS. It is a great vacation lens. Now if you were going on a trip specifically for photography then I would take everything :P.

That would be my vote too.

well if you are only taking one lens then it pretty much has to be either the 24-105 (my choice if you must have just one lens) or one of the 24-70s you listed. remember though that the 70-200 f4 is not that heavy. but if you could bring 2 lenses then I would go with the 17-40 and a 70-200. I went to Italy this January with a 60d and just a 15-85 (the 24-105 is the closest u can get to this on ff) and other than a time or 2 in which i could have used a fast prime (eating dinner w/the girlfriend), and only a couple of times where wider would have been nice (trying to get the hole inside of the coliseum in and a few of the churches could have used wider). but overall I am happy with taking just the 15-85.

There's your problem. One lens won't accomplish both ends. Best compromise, and it isn't a good one, would be something like an 85/1.8 or 100/2.

If I were ever in a position to only have one lens, it'd be a 50mm, but that's my preference. I'd say the 24-105L will probably work well for you if you're OK with the f/4 aperture. If you want a lens to compliment your current setup though, I'd go with the 100/2 or a 70-200 as others have said.

Being from HK, I would say if I were to view things from a visitor's perspective and could only have 1 lens, it would be the 24-105. You can be needing WA at one moment then needing telephoto the next, so it really is the best single lens solution. Ideally though, you'd want at least 2 lenses e.g. 17-40 and 70-200.

Thanks for all your replies.

I am planning to buy 70-200 next year when i have enough money
Right now i have a deal for 24-105 for only 600$

Should i get the 24-105 if i have the 17-40 ?
Or would it be a waste?

24-105 would be a very good choice for a travel lens; not so much for dim interiors, although for static subjects, the IS will help.

I wouldnt buy a 24-105. Maybe you can rent it or something else for your trip...

like a good wide angle and a 24-70 of your choice.

but i would save up the money for something good :)
