Now that Nikon have released the new DF with a full frame sensor and that old school 35mm look and design, is anyone else wondering whether Canon will try and rival it?

If if not full frame, maybe a 1.6x crop version?

I quite like this old school design thats going on, such as the Fuji X20's design, old school leather effect grips and dials everywhere. Looks good yet still practical.

Canons 35mm film cameras had some nice designs like the Canon FT QL, that if revamped, could easily match the design and build quality of the Nikon DF, yet possibly out do the optical performance aswell.

Whats your thoughts?

I'd rather they brought out a more effective mirrorless offering with accents of say a Canonet QL GIII if going old school.

Yawn.

Honestly the DF is a piece of fashion misdirection.

Its a D610 with a bunch of pointless dials and a D4 sensor thats really out of place. Canon have other things to look at.

I do like the old school design cameras are going for at the minute, but i do agree its more a fashion accessory than anything else.

To me it seems inevitable that Canon will release their own version.

Can't disagree with that Rob. If looking for a full frame alternative for my D300 I'd go D610 or D800, if I want a retro camera with dials that takes pre-Ai lenses then I'll use one of my old film bodies.

Now Canon have the lead in AF only new sensor tech is going to be exciting imo. The packaging is not unimportant but it is a secondary consideration.

Short answer no.

If if not full frame, maybe a 1.6x crop version?

Nope, 35mm or gtfo, there are already a million APS and m4/3 cameras that do the retro/compact thing and better.

I quite like this old school design thats going on, such as the Fuji X20's design, old school leather effect grips and dials everywhere. Looks good yet still practical.

Buy one then.

Canons 35mm film cameras had some nice designs like the Canon FT QL, that if revamped, could easily match the design and build quality of the Nikon DF, yet possibly out do the optical performance aswell.

Optical performance is a different kettle of fish, and the old Canon film cameras were nice because they didn't sport digital baggage, the Df isn't actually much better in that regard; chop off the top and it's just another mid-range DSLR.

Whats your thoughts?

If Canon enters this race now, they'll be even more behind the curve than Nikon is with the Df...

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

The DF is nothing spectacular (basically a D600 with an inferior sensor and a premium price tag) but Canon can never catch up image quality-wise until they start using up-to-date sensor technology.

I think Canon will best Nikon by making theirs come in cool colors!

Yeah. People can have any color they want as long as it's black. Who knew Henry Ford worked for Canon.

I think canon would be better off with an x100 competitor, stick a sensor in a canonet ql17 and there you have it. Others are right, the Nikon df is a dslr with a different hat on.

I just hope that if Ford re-releases a car that looks just like the Model-T that my company ignores it and does not try to resurrect anything that Mr. Daimler or Mr. Benz were driving around in 1885.

Give me a break, these Retro designs aren't that dated. Whens the Nikon Brownie hawkeye lookalike coming?

Might seem old school to you, but I'm living across the Neckar from Bad Cannstatt right now.

More to the point....it doesn't matter if the design is 1885 or 1970....retro is retro. And retro is never cutting edge.
