Thanks Ish, Brian.

Unfortunately not shooting much bugs - had a bad encounter with a Japanese Hornet (aka Tiger Head Hornet) about 2 weeks ago. The sting area though scabbed is still somewhat red and painful and the surrounding area gets quite itchy at times. I suppose something with a 6mm stinger will do a bit of damage. :)

Love the transmissive light in this shot, she seems to glow from inside.

No that one was only about 2-3 inches long unlike yours which is much scarier. :)

I think they are only in Asia and surrounding areas. Nasty beasts from what I have read. In China 1000+ people die every year from their stings. Also many deaths in Taiwan and Japan.

On the other hand the hive is simply beautiful and they actually look great. Unlucky for me did not get the chance to grab any good shots.

Went back a couple of days later but found only burned out remains of the hive. The burning smell was still there so was probably done a few hours earlier.

Probably would have been left alone but there is a path leading up to a youth camps further up the hill so was maybe the right thing to do in the circumstances. Possibly the villager who helped me suck out the venom with some wild herbs told the forestry people and one thing lead to another...

Doc I saw later said their sting could lead to renal failure and I should watch my water input and output was about normal. The villager said 3 stings = 911 and in a hurry.
