So the new SX50 is out of the box --- I was trying to take some sunset clouds, but kept getting the yellow box saying it couldn't focus, and the results were fuzzy. :( On my old snapper I could choose a landscape function, which would auto set to infinity. Any easy / quick ways on the SX50 to achieve this ?

While I'm at it ... think not supplying a paper manual is too cheap! I always liked to carry it wth me when travelling.

But if it has to be a download - is there a colour PDF available ? My download was b+w.

No color PDF that I'm aware up.

You can try focusing on the edges of the cloud(s) or the cloud edge and the sky. That seems to work better at times than pointing at the center of the cloud.

Great little camera with lots of options. Enjoy the learning process.

The PDF's got as much color as Canon has used in any of its manuals, printed or electronic, for quite some time (cover only). Looking back, I think it's been over 10 years since Canon used color beyond the cover of a camera manual, and even then it was just a single color used where they now use simple grey bars to delimit sections and some call-out boxes.

Try focusing on the horizon; the depth of field on the SX50 at longer distances is deep enough that even a relatively close horizon (near-by or mid-distance trees) will still give you good focus on the clouds.

Thanks guys. It's raining so I'll have to wait for another nice evening.

Ref colour manual - guess I was fooled by this thread

Sorry ! Bit odd when they don't even have to pay for colour printing :-(

I'm experimenting away happily.

There is one book devoted to the SX50 - but it's in German.
I've printed the manual but it turned out like a small brick once I assembled it.

I get quite nostalgic on this issue. My first 'real' camera back in the late 1960's was a Pentax S1a and at that time I was able to purchase a supremely helpful hardback book all about that range of SLR's.

Hey Ho - it's what they call progress.

Good to see another old fashioned user ! Shame there don't even seem to be any independent user guides.

I had the same problem and I used manual focus set to infinity, and then, when you half press the shutter, it seems to focus easier.
