Cute shot and quite sharp. I have mixed feelings about the specular highlights on the hair.

He's so dark, bringing up any lightness on him is a challenge to say the least ;)

This dog is pure black, not a shade of anything else on him, I'm welcome to any suggestions :)

What a cutie pie. I feel like the light on him is a bit stark. I'd like to see the light softened so they are not so stark on his black coat.

I tried various settings and this seemed to be the best, the flash is bounced, to be able to "see" him...

Using Camera Raw, how about lowering the color temp to adjust white balance and then reduce the clarity. That will help minimize the harshness of the differences between the lights and darks.

That's all I did to this edit. Here's a screen grab showing what settings I used:

In your original he/she/it looks almost greasy. I think Gene's edit works well.
How about straightening the vertical?

I really like what you did Navy to bring the specular highlights down as Titus noted, but on my monitor (calibrated but without my calibration device at the moment, someone is borrowing it) seems to have brought up a lot of blues in his hair. Granted I calibrated before pulling off my device so I "should" still be calibrated....

While it seems kind of muted, I like what you did here, can you explain your steps?

He, and yea I can see that now :(

He is so dark that he does look "greasy" in real life...

Thanks. As far as the color of the highlights, I think it looks natural for blacks to have highlights on the blueish side but that's just me. The blues can be desaturated to a more gray tone if that's your preference.

Oh, and you could call me 'doc' which was what my Navy nickname was...or just call me Gene. ;)

I like the original... I would just crop part of the table (?) on the left. Maybe even part of the right, too. More dog, less wood.
