A friend of mine who owns a bird feed, feeder and nesting box store has a wooded area with a stream running through it and lots of feeders at the back of his store.
He asked me my advice about a point & shoot camera to get photos there, having never used a point & shoot I told him I would ask you guys.
He knows nothing about photography and plans to use it in the auto mode, his price range is up to $400. The area is heavy woods so not a lot of bright light and he would need a reasonable zoom.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Keep in mind that even with a zoom birds are going to be a very small part of the photo. So your friend shouldn't expect too much from any P&S for this task. They don't boast the longest zoom but I'm personally partial to the S series PowerShots.

Thank you at least it is somewhere to start I don't think he expects anything like a DSLR would give him.

I love my Canon SX50 as a point and shoot. The 50x zoom lens is awesome on birds. Sell for about $370 so they are in your price range.

The original post made me think of this too. Not exactly a P&S, but a nice bridge cam with mega-zoom. Take a look at the SX50 HS picture thread here in this forum and you will see lots of good pics of birds.
