Manfrotto MN 682B self standing monopod.

Hi guys,

Does anyone have any experience with this? I need to know if it's worth getting as I'm looking for something to use in exhibition halls that doesn't take up a shed load of room like my tripod, easy to pick up and walk around with and light to carry, so I can use a shutter speed of a second or so with no shake.

Camera on top would be a 60D + 50 f/1.4 so not that heavy...

I have one just like it as mine is meant for video. If you have a light and balanced load you can balance one on top easy, just don't trust it and make sure you are constantly watching it.

Varizoom makes a few that look a little sturdier. Never used so can't comment on how it would hold up.

Mike, they look good... don't look like I can get them over here in the UK though, so will have to think about that.

We use those monopods all the time for our PTRZ CoFDM pod cams on BTVision. Pretty good & pretty stable for what they are.

I use it regularly. For what it is, it works well. Bulky? Heavy? Sluggish? Manfrotto heads and RC2 (ugh) QR plates? Yes to all. See the Kirk MPA-2 to cure the later problem.

But it's still a decent monopod. With the "feet"? I agree with the prior suggestion to not let it out of your sight, or don't turn your back on it. I would further suggest keeping one hand or a connected strap on it at all times. Safe is more pleasant, if slower, than sorry.

The specs say it folds to 20" - but with the bottom collar needed to insert the feet, the fold-down spec is a long-ish 21.5" (plus, of course, head - when attached) - which would be no problem if you're 6'5" or so... Even without your L-bracketed, gripped camera, it becomes a load to walk around with for day-long sojourns.

I have one and like everyone else has said it works like advertised if you have a balanced load. I used it with a 5D2 and 85L and had no problems, but don't walk away from it. Getting the 3 legs out of the base isn't very hard but you'll probably want to collapse them and not walk around with it while they're extended and they're tripping hazards.
