T5i error code 1 with 55-250 kit

Had a hard time searching the forums, since the "T5i" is shorter than the minimal character length.

I have a friend with a brand new T5i that is having problems with her 55-250 kit lens. The camera is giving her error code 1, stating the lens isn't communicating. Apparently it works normally in sport mode......but any other mode selected, and the camera/lens don't seem to like each other. Apparently the camera knows what lens is connected to it, since it is properly ID'ing it......but this issue is happening intermittently.

This a known issue? I'm wondering if it isn't the lens itself, but then again......

Have her clean the contacts on both the camera body and the lens with a clean soft cloth and a few drops of rubbing alcohol. They may be dirty and are making intermittent contact.
