Don't forget to pay for a license if you're a pro - or give a donation if you're not. These guys should be applauded (and rewarded) for giving us such a great piece of software.

Is this as good as, or better than Irfanview (which i've been using for ~13 years)?

They are pretty much the same. I know I was undecided for quite some time which I preferred - and I still don't know what made me go for FastStone. Being free you could check it out - but you'd probably hate it because it doesn't do things exactly the way you're used to. I know that's what happened when I tried IrfanView again last year - there's nothing wrong with it per se, but nothing that made me want it enough to learn a new way of doing things.

Just be happy that we have two free/cheap programs available.

Thanks for the reminder! I used FS years ago, but sorta' let it blend into the background for the likes of DPP and ACR. But I just viewed the video here:

http://ask-leo.com …ststone_image_viewer.html (external link)

and it looks like its got some really nice feature now. Kel, the video compares FS to irfanview.

Just for the record, Avast anti-virus reports the fsviewer.exe file in infected with the win32.evo-gen trojan. I have not confirmed whether or not this is a false detection. It apparently popped up 11/13.

I wrote FS support, they have not responded.

Edit:

Funny thing is that when avast is run on the install program (FSViewerSetup49.exe) it is negative. It is only when installing and the FSviewer.exe file is pulled out of it that avast detects the trojan.

Follow up:

I isolated the FSviewer.exe file and submitted it to 5 online virus scanners. Out of their 40 or 50 scans, it got one hit from ClamAV (never heard of them). Looks to me like a false positive.

You might try the "portable" version, that's the one I download.

Nice set of features! Appears to be Windows only. Is that correct?

I used FastStone years ago, but not since I started using Lightroom for image management. It looks like it would be great for viewing images on they fly, however.

One question about the editing tools. I have gotten used to the non-destructive nature of LR edits. I don't expect that FastStone does things that way, but does it automatically edit a copy to protect the original?
