Was over at a friends house the other night and he asked me this question. I couldn't figure it out.

How does one get the AF points to light up to confirm focus with a manual lens?

I tried searching, but I think my query's were just too generic.

You just half press the shutter as you rack focus and then it'll confirm as you reach focus.

On top of that it depends on what MF lens you are talking about.

My Zeiss is ZE mount, so it beeps and light up if focus is achieved.

I believe other adapted (old/vintage/film days) lens you'll need an adapter with focus confirm.

I believe that to get a manual lens to confirm, the adapter you are using has to have a confirmation chip

Ahh, okay. Maybe his adapter didn't have a chip in it. Should focus confirmation work with an EF lens that is just switched to MF?

Yes. Just look at the back of the lens, if you can see a little metal contact like this on the lens, it should give you confirmation. The "chip" on adapted lenses looks very similar to the normal EF lens contacts as pictured here

Okay, I've tried it with my 35L and still can't get the lights to light up. I was using back button focus and switching my AF-On and * buttons. So maybe if I disable those settings it will work? I'll give it a whirl when I get home.

You have to hold whatever button it is that you AF with while you're manually focusing (half-pressed shutter button, or back button). It won't work if you're just focusing without holding the AF button.
