Hello, I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question so mods please feel free to switch if necessary.

I would like to hookup my DSLR to my laptop so that I can review images taken in the studio in real time. I wasn't sure if the software necessary to do that comes with the camera or if I need to purchase it along with the cable.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ohhhhhh boy a thread for me!!!

You are looking to (buzzword) tether your camera. (Buzzword) Tethering is extremely extremely extremely!!! Useful.

As it turns out, both of the cameras currently in your signature tether very easily.

You will need either canon's own software, Eos Utility(free with camera), Adobe LightRoom($150?), Apple Aperture($80), or PhaseOne's Capture1 Pro($300).

AND obviously, the USB cable too.

I HAVE to use capture one to actually run my camera, so I'm sort of stuck using it. But the Eos Utility is a clunky interface.

Of course, a fast computer also helps, too. Try to keep the cable length as short as possible as an extension cable greatly reduces the transfer rate.

the beauty of capture one is you can use an app called capture pilot so anyone with an IOS device can view the photos on their iphone/ipad as you're shooting. clients love it. you can also create an adhoc network on your laptop so they can connect directly thru that instead of a router type of network (great for use in the field)

i also use lightroom and it's really easy. just plug in your camera and go to file->tether capture->start teather capture

THAT is interesting. I live in the sticks so it could come in real handy.

If either, or both of you Capture One folks could join us over here, https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1312563 there is some interest in that software and not a lot of opinions to go around.

thanks.

Breeze Systems makes a program called DSLR Remote Pro (external link) to accomplish this task.

I've had good results using EOSUtilities on its own because it uses the various in-camera abilities but it sounds interesting to "hook up" other people!
