Old MF lenses with a 6D

Many old MF lenses have issues with full frame mirrors, and I know of the resources that detail the particular M42 lenses that interfere with the mirror on a 5D.

Does anyone know if the same lenses have the same problems with a 6D?

My first thought is that of course they would, they're both full frame. But then, the 6D viewfinder is only 98% coverage, so that may affect the size or placement of the mirror, meaning that my Super Takumar 50 1.4 (which I have been using on my crop) will be fine with my new 6D.

Wishful thinking?

Cheers, Damien

I've never had an issue with any of the various MF lenses I have. The only one that's ever touched the mirror was my M42 mount Yashica DS-M 50/1.7 which I think only hit because the adapter I had on it let it focus past infinity.

The mirror hitting the lens isn't going to destroy or harm your mirror unless you're extremely unlucky. It'll stop after taking the shot, much like if you had mirror lock up turned on, after you change focus (so the elements extend) it'll drop the mirror back down, and if you shoot in LV you avoid the problem all together.

I would just try the lens out and see how it works.

I only once read from one who has damaged his 5D with such a mirror crash. He need Canon repair.
I could imaging a big damage when one focus the lens even a bit more to infinity if possible - and the mirror is pressed backwards.

I had dozens of mirror crashes, at one instance (conversion test with FD 24/1.4L) the mirror fell off. Which is quite a normal thing for the EOS 5D.

From what I read and remember the EOS 6D has less mirror-lens crash problems than the EOS 5D.

Best adapter I have found is the happypagehk adapter (comes w optix v6 chip) $85 on ebay
machined for perfect clearance and locks well.
Infinity focus and confirmation is perfect.

works on my zeiss contax (50mm 1.7, 50mm 1.4, distagon 28/2.8/, 85mm 1.4, sonnar 135,2/8/and mutar II doubler)

no mirror issues.. fotodiox was junk

Canon 6D, Canon L 24-105, Zeiss Distagon 28mm 2.8, Planar 50mm 1.4, Planar 85mm 1.4, Sonnar 135mm 2.8 & Zeiss Mutar 2x, Canon 50mm 1.8

Maybe I've been lucky, but all of my Fotodiox adapters work perfectly.

Can you remember where you read this? That's what I'm looking for . . .

Over at Fredmiranda are some threads to EOS 6D mirror clearance. It seems that it is probably better than with the 5D classic, and about the same or little better than the 5DII.
One wrote a lens that hit the 5D and 5DII mirror works fine on the 6D.
The Canon FD 55mm/1.2 Aspherical seem to work on the 6D, but not the 5DII at infinity.

But it seems it is not a big difference to the 5DII - tolerances from camera and lenses are very critical. Such not important distances could easily have +0.1/-0.1mm allowed tolerance or even more - and this is for us lens adapter and converter a big issue.

I have an m42 adapter I got off of ebay for like 10 bucks and my tak 50 1.4 works fine with my 6d. I have to say I haven't tried infinite focus though, and the lens does protrude behind the adapter at infinite focus, so i'm apprehensive to try it.

i'm pretty sure that any lens longer than 60mm (for m42) work 100%.

This is exactly what I have (Super Tak, the original one). I tried it out indoors last night, no problem. Let me know when you take it to infinity and it clears the mirror . . . :)
