Ok, I just received a new (to me) 1DX and am planning to use it to shoot football and basketball later today. I have been reading other's recommendations on sports settings but I am struggling with the AF system in a very basic way.

I have the multi-controller setup to select my AF point. I move it to select an off center focus point but when I start focus (using the back button, AI Servo) it moves back to the center point. I can't get the camera to focus using anything but the center point.

Help! Any ideas? I have a lot to learn about this camera.

Are you shooting in custom function mode instead of tv/av?

Shooting in All-point? Or selected AF mode?

I remember in All-Point, you can set it to remember where it starts all the time so it always start at the same spot... or remember the last spot where you left it at.

I don't have a 1DX but I remember something similar with the 7D, a registered AF point. According to the manual, that point can be cleared by holding down the AF point selection button and pressing the exposure compensation button.

Julian, I'm not sure what all point mode is but. I tried pressing the FP select button then I see all the points in the viewfinder. I can move the selected point around and leave it somewhere at the edge. I can scroll through the expansion modes and get back to the normal, open square.

When i press the focus button it switches to the center point in the viewfinder and that is where it focuses.

OVF I will try, once I figure out which is the exposure comp button.

Thanks guys.

Did you do a reset of all settings when you got it? Sounds like maybe there is a registered af point to the af-on button.

To register an AF point; press the AF Point Selection button and ISO button simulatenously.

To un-register the AF point, press the AF point Selection Button and the +/- exposure compensation button (which is next to the ISO button) simultaneously.

Yes, I thought that I reset it but apparently not.

That was the problem. The * button was set to recall the registered focus point. I actually did it in the Custom controls screen, select the * button, press info. You get two choices. It was on the wrong choice.

Thanks for all the quick help guys. I need to leave in the next 45 minutes and I was getting nervous.

Glad to hear you got it sorted. Have fun with your new toy. Be sure to post a few shots later.
