Dear Board,

I've read through the flash basics post and I want to know if I am correct in assuming that any Canon flash with an -EX designation in the model number will work with BOTH Canon EOS film and digital cameras?

For example, if I were to purchase a 550EX will it offer fully automated flash capability with my EOS Elan and 7NE as well as my 20D and 1DMK11?

I'm looking for a one and done solution, and I would welcome 3rd party alternatives as well.

The 550EX is E-TTL compatible with the Elan 7/7E/7NE/II/II E, 1DMKII, and of course the 20D.

To be precise, the Canon Elan uses ATTL, while the 7E uses ETTL. Both flash modes are supported within the 550EX.

That's better even better news. I don't do a lot of flash photography and I'd like to have one flash serve all of my needs. With your post and OVF's I'm confident that can be done with the 550EX.
