Different lenses for different purposes, what are you trying to do/where do you feel you're missing the most? I have both and like both.

Since you already have a 70-200/2.8, I would go for the 17-40/4. It was my favorite lens until I traded it for a 16-35/2.8II. I never would have traded it if I didn't absolutely need the extra stop.

My bag always had my 17-40 and 70-300L. I think I used my 24-105 a handful of times before I sold it. I had no use for it since I had better lenses to cover the same focal lengths.

That being said, if you are looking for a single-lens-does-it-all, walk-around-type of lens, then the 24-105/4 may be better suited for you. Like colorblinded said above, what do you need this for? What are you trying to accomplish that you haven't been able to with the lenses you currently have?

Exactly. If you need help, we need to know what you plan to shoot with it. I also own both and like both, but they are definitely very different. The 17-40 would be handy since you have a cropper as well; it would fit the bill as a standard zoom while being an ultrawide for your 6d. I really like the versatility of the 24-105, and like it better than my old 24-70 (the "brick").

I have the same issue right now. I have the 17-40 and I have an offer to trade straight across for a 24-105. If I can pull things together I'll do it. My other lens is a 70-200 and I find the FL gap to be too large.

Thanks guys. Just looking for some family parties. I think i will go for 24-105 because i think 17-40 is too wide to my 6D.

Get a 50/1.4. I never used my 24-105 once I got my 70-300L. I paired it with my 17-40 and was very happy with it. A 50/1.4 will "fill the gap", cost less, has better IQ, weigh less and take up less space in your bag.

Great choice, I think, for a 6D. The 24-105 would be good, too, as a walkaround, especially on FF. Usable wide-angle, actual telephoto, just maybe stop it down a notch or two and know the lenses limitations, because ALL lenses have limitations. You don't use a Lexus to race the Grand Prix, but it doesn't mean Lexus is worthless and cheap and terribly limited---it just isn't for all applications.
