another thought is I might upgrade to a full frame before reaching for a ultra wide lens.

I have been doing some research and am leaning towards a canon 35mm f2 because it is more like a 50mm on my cropped sensor. any thoughts?

Sigma 30 1.4 Art then. 1 stop faster, better IQ, better build, HSM motor.

Yeah - it's EXACTLY like 35 mm.
It's true to say that the captured field of view of a FF sensor with a 50 mm lens is about the same as that captured by an APS-C sensor with a 35 mm lens, but is that really helpful for you? Maybe it is.

I like the 35 f2 because it is small and light but the Sigma 30 Art is a damn nice lens! It has some heft to it and feels solid. Very sharp. Has an ultrasonic motor, the 35 f2 doesn't.

I don't know if it is worth that much to me at the moment. where If I had the cash I would def go for the 35 art but I'm weary of dedicating that much cash to a lens I may not like in the long run. Even if I rent it then buy and later don't like it. Is the f2 still worth getting even though it isnt USM? Is sharpness a problem for it or is it just that the 35 art so so much better?

okay so for the sigma 30mm 1.4. what are the opinions on the newer art lens and the old ex lens? are they both only for crop sensors? I do plan on updating to a full framed camera but not for 5 years or so. Is the art lens worth 50% more in price?

Ultimately, for your kind of shooting (as described), it sounds like you are seriously going to have to consider full-frame at some point.

I do plan on updating to a full framed camera but not for 5 years or so.

Solve today's issues today, and tomorrow's (or those in 5 years) then.
In that time, the lens landscape may well have changed substantially and other options are likely to be available.

You can also be sure that whatever purpose you purchase a lens for for use on APS-C it will not serve the same purpose on FF due to the difference in captured field of view.

If you DO want to get a lens that will be compatible for both, and serve your APS-C needs today, you need to be confident that the different FoV on FF will actually be useful.

If you get a 30-35 mm lens, that's basically a "normal" lens for APS-C. On FF it will be slightly wide, although many consider it to be a suitable "normal" lens on that format too (despite what I said above, I guess)

Or the Sigma 35 ;)

If you go for the 30/1.4, get the new Art version; its optically better, has nicer build, and is compatible with the USB dock for firmware updates and MFA over different distances if needed. Although I did try 3 of the old EX version without any issues.
