Hey there,

Looking to create a watermark which I can put on my low res pics I will put on my website for clients to view. I want something pretty 'inconspicuous' (might sound odd I suppose seen as the point of the watermark is to make the image unusable) but I don't like them plastered all over the picture.

I suppose perhaps more of a label than a watermark.

Anyway, this guy has something similar on his pictures http://www.flickr.com …theweirdoctor/8524124676/ (external link) , I like the fact is goes across the width of the picture, with a little bit of unobtrusive text on the side (although I would like the text a little larger)

How would I go about making something like this? Could I create a preset and then automate in Lightroom?

Thanks in advance.

If you get chance you should check out his 100 strangers stuff, it's pretty amazing - the one I have linked is my favourite :)

Cheers again.

Use a simple text and a graphical watermark "banner" at low opacity.

Lightroom will do it without a plugin.

If you want simple text, Lightroom can do that very easily; if you want more complex text, or an image like your logo, then you'll build a PNG (with transparency) in Photoshop or Illustrator, and have Lightroom use that image as your watermark. You can adjust the size, opacity, location.

If you want to do something different for each image, maybe Mogrify is a better solution. I haven't used it; I just have a couple of relatively simple presets for "branding" marks: My name and company at the bottom of the image, one version in white for "dark" sets, and one version in black for "light" sets.

I think I want the same thing for each. I was thinking just a simple 'banner' which the opacity is low so it would go over anything. I suppose I would need one with white text and one with black text for the relevant, different, shots

Opinions on this?

Does it look 'professional' without taking over the image?

Looks good honestly.

Though over time, my watermarks became smaller and smaller and more inconspicuous.

If it were me, I'd lower the opacity of the white bar a tad bit more.

Agreed. Looks pretty good to me, but even though it works for THIS image it may be too obtrusive to work for MOST images.

What are your goals for this watermark/label? Branding? Theft protection?

Bit of both I suppose. My idea was that after I've done a portrait session I would put pictures on my website in a secure gallery, the client could then select the ones they wanted printing.

I plan on uploading a relatively small copy (not sure what's the optimum size), but thought coupled with a watermark it would dissuade theft. Plus I quite like the branding idea.

Although I have found a problem; as you say, on some pictures it's far too obtrusive and covers the eyes and things. I don't want it to 'worsen' the image.

It generally looks ok on most, but some it's too distracting, some I can't decide. (see picture at the top of this comment)

I also want to soften the edge of the white edge but not sure how to do it.
