New 60D Changes Settings In Manual Mode

Is there any circumstance when a properly working 60D is supposed to change shutter settings on it's own in Manual Mode?

I bought a virtually new 60D on eBay, and when using it in Manual Mode the camera kept changing shutter settings on it's own.

I had the 18-200mm kit lens and a Sigma DG-500 Super speedlight attached to the hot shoe and running in manual mode if that makes any difference.

Maybe if you have safety shift enabled...though i thought that only works in Tv and Av.

The flash is the tip-off here. The 60D is limited to 1/250 with a flash powered up. If you set a higher shutter speed, the camera will automatically drop it to 1/250 when you meter. The only way around it is to enable HSS, I believe. With HSS you can use up to 1/8000.

Where's this safety shift found and how does one turn it off?

I don't think that's the problem, but I'd like to know anyway. It can't be Safety Shift because my research indicates SShift...

1. only works in Av and Tv, not Manual, and

2. in Av it changes the aperture, not the shutter speed.

It's not because of the flash synch speed. I was setting to no faster than 1/125; and the camera was changing the setting to between 1/13 and 1/60. This was a low light situation (an indoor dance party), and I was dragging the shutter as much as I could without getting too much motion blur.

I failed to mention, however, I have the Canon BG-E9 Battery Grip on this camera. I'm not used to a battery grip camera. It just occurred to me to wonder if I was inadvertently turning the control wheel on it with my pinkie finger. That would change the shutter speed.

Is there a way to disable that wheel?

You enable/disable safety shift at at CF1-6. See page 253 of the manual

The Sigma EF 500 DG Super can frustrating to use in the HSS mode. If the shutter drops below 1/200 sec it will shut the HSS mode off. You then have to reenable the mode as I recall. Using Tv or M mode helps but there is a sequence to set things up; 1st set the shutter speed faster than 1/200, then put the flash in HSS mode by pressing the + or - button until "FP" appears in its LCD display. Confirmed it with my 60D. Both external flash in ETTL and the popup will drop the SS to the maximum sync speed (1/250). The external flash on the hotshoe will drop to sync speed in manual mode as well.

Thank you.
(Is that appropriate? I would say that if we were all in the same room.)

I use a Polaroid grip on my 60D. It has an ON/OFF switch that completely disables the grip's buttons. I don't know if the Canon grip has that. I can still use my camera with the grip turned off.
