I was making a speadsheet with all my gears SN's on it for my insurance company. On the bottom of my 20D is a sticker with camera info on it with a siver box that I assume is for the SN. This box is blank. I can find no other SN on it anywhere.

Am I missing something? I know I can get it of my sales slip but should there not be a number on the camera some where so it could be identified?

Weird! Maybe it's display sample? Anyway, you can find SN in EXIF (not sure in your case ;) ) and it also should be printed on the box and warranty card.

It was NIB. I have the SN but should it be found by anyone there is no way of tracing it back to me by the SN because it is not shown. I don't imagine many people would think to take a picture and look at the EXIF for the SN.

Maybe I should talk to the local Canon Service Center.

I remember when the 350D first came out seeing quite a few comments about the serial number rubbing off the bottom of the camera, maybe it's printed on the 20D in the same way? If you are really concerned you could always get the SN etched onto the base.

That is seriously weird. My 20D has a clear Serial Number on it. I'd definitely find out about that one. Maybe we could contact quality control at Canon and see if they'll give you a goodie for your problem? :) You can try.

Is it stamped on everyone elses label with ink, or is it embossed somehow. Mine has either rubbed off and I haven't done anything out of the ordinary to cause this, or it was never put on in the first place.

Can you take a picture of it so we can see? I know, how can you take a picture of your 20D with the 20D? You can't. But if you could, I'd be interested to see what it looks like compared to my 20D. Mine does look like it is stamped on, not embossed.

In the full EXIF information there's a camera serial number displayed. Don't know if it is identical with the serial number on the sticker (don't have my camera with me at the moment), but assume it should be

If you can't see it in the Canon software, you might try looking at BreezeBrowser (there it is visible).

Best regards,
Andy

There were numerous posts about the missing serial numbers on these stickers a while back. Not a conspiracy, they seem to be in ink on a metallised sticker and just rub off - either look on the box the body came in or in the EXIF info.

Interesting thread and something that we all need to look at. If it gets stolen that number needs to be somewhere. I know that on lot of items that there is a serial number in a location that is not generally revealed to the buyer. For instance cars have the VIN in several places as the first thing that crooks do it get rid of the VIN if they know what they are doing. Personally I have my infor in a couple of places that are not obvious in and on the camera and the grip. From experience there is nothing more frustrating then someone wanting to report stolen items and they have no serial numbers. It makes it very very hard for law enforcement to recover the property and or make a case. Take this seriously folks.

I have the SN from the exif and the SN from the bill of sale has the same number preceded with 3 more #'s (210).

Here is a pic of the label.

Jim, that was so rubbing off if that was the case. It doesn't look like anything was there before. Where is that SEARS DIAMOND SCARING TOOL?

Given the lack of wear on the rest of the label I suspect it may never have been there at all! As mentioned above, maybe you can get it etched on...

Slightly OT, however the warranty card which came with my 20D did not have the body number pre-printed like all the other warranty cards I've had for Canon equipment. I filled it out by hand and sent a copy of it with my purchase receipt for the Canon Rebate. It was denied b/c the warranty card was not pre-printed. It's not worth my time to fight over the $100 though it still irks me.

I talked one of the service reps here in town and he said I could bring the camera in so they can confirm the SN off the firmware (won't take my word for it at this point I guess). I don't have to leave the camera while they order a new label. I have to bring the camera back in when the label gets in to have it put on the camera. A bit of running around but I won't lose the use of the camera at least.
