It is kind of a waste on Canon body until Canon releases its high MP body.

This beauty needs to be paired with the A7R or D800E to make it worthwhile.

This is so not true (that it would be a waste on current Canon bodies).

Would it be nicer on a 36MP or greater body? Sure. But, that doesn't mean the lens' performance is "wasted" on a lower MP body.

Actually it's super easy to focus with the auto confirmation. Half shutter, turn zoom, beeps in focus with focus points, and press down
Where it gets annoying is with anything that really moves :)
Yeah, I probably won't bring this to a children's birthday party :)

Pffft, I guess I'll wait for Zeiss' best lens: The Zeiss OPUS.

Otus sounds like a second rate optic... ;)

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

I always liked Otus...cracked me up every time he put himself in jail for being the town drunk. I guess Zeiss named their lens line after him because he was so heavy.

Barney Fife would be a great name for a line of ultra-light lenses with a way-out-of-proportion swagger.

I been browsing the image samples for extended periods of time and the IQ from this lens is is simply mind boggling. I find it weird that it took all these years to get a truly excellent optical design for a standard focal length lens but I guess it's just such a difficult lens to design. The existing lenses have been average at best, resolution wise...
And I don't think low MP on the Canon DSLRs is wasted on the Otus. The Zeiss 135/2 kinda proved that wrong for to me, so why should the Otus be any different :) obviously it will shine even more,on the next gen. of Canon sensors :)

I understand what you are saying. I'm suggesting that some of us have developed techniques and styles that embrace some of the existing lens / camera products and as a result we consistently produce images that meet or exceed not only our only expectations - but those of our clients. So for me, I think it's sufficient to stay on top of technological innovation developments in the marketplace and continue to develop plans for it's possible inclusion in our tool box.

Note the very large number of lens elements - extreme for a prime.

This world have had access to magnificent glass grinding skills for a huge number of years - which is why so many 50 years old lenses still do very well.

But the computational complexity of making a design with this number of lens elements - and very large number of moving groups - is immense.

Zoom lenses always needs more lens elements and groups for a given quality level, and it is only quite recently that we have seen really great zoom lenses show up. Lenses that arent just good "for a zoom" but really is very, very good. It is these very recent improvements that have allowed Zeiss to make a prime with as much elements/groups as a high-end zoom and thereby create an astonishing prime.

It is likely that quite a number of great or magic lenses will show up from quite a number of lens manufacturers - the main limitation might be which manufacturer who has a strong enough brand name to fight for the few customers who can afford this class of lenses. Sigma, Tamron and Tokina just have to settle for either fight at the most high-volume niches or intentionally make a bit cheaper/simpler lenses to match their expected customer base.

But the guys with the strongest high-end brand names have probably plotted a number of exciting lenses for the comming years. The polarisation between high-end pro and hobbyist will increase.

From the tests shots my impression is that the bokeh/look is quite amazing.

Interesting lens!

Price is on par with the Leica 50mm 1.4 ASPH. For that price, I'm sure we will see comparisons soon! Perhaps versus Leica's "perfect" 50mm F2 APO (even though the Leica is over $7k).
