Will the canon's 35 f1.4 Mark II win over other lenses, like the sigma 35 f1.4?

Just wondering, i read on canon rumors that it was expected to be out next year.

I would imagine when the 35L II does come about, it will rival the Sigma 35 for resolution. If anything, it will be close enough that it will be splitting hairs between them. But expect the Sigma to be half the price, while the Canon will actually AF properly.

Chose thy fate.

I don't really think that lenses "win", but it will definitely be a great lens - at a great big price

I only speak the truth! :D

While I had two different copies of the Sigma 35, both behaved identical on my 5D3... Wonky AF in artificial light. Drove me insane. One also developed the screechy AF, which was a bit worrisome.

Anywho, the optics were stunning though... Extremely impressive. I just wish the AF was a bit more refined. If so, it would be in my bag permanently. I just can't have a lens I cannot depend on in tricky lighting, especially when my big profile jobs are under complex stage lighting (where the Sigma did the worst... Not even close to being sharp). The 35L can nail it without problem. In normal light, the Sigma performed flawlessly though for the most part. Had no issues at all.

In the end, the customer would rather have a sharp shot from a softer lens than a sharper shot that is unobtainable due to the AF of the sharper Sigma ;)

I really did try to love it... It just did not work out for me! So I look forward to the Canon :D

This
(not the, don't generalise please) consumer is perfectly happy with his very sharp Sigma in all kinds of light. ;)

Also, I'd expect a Canon Mk II to cost more than double the price of the Sigma, given the current 35L costs 14xx, a new version would probably add another 5-6xx on top of that.

But it will AF faster than the Sigma, especially in very low light, and it could even be sharper and may have weather sealing.

But it hasn't even been announced yet so all this speculation is rather useless. Canon will do what it does when it does it.

yes, it will be the sharpest 35mm 1.4 available, and it will be the most expensive as well. The current argument will continue, except it will be the Mk 2 vs the S35, with the S35 owners holding firm that their lens is better. Thus, the internet argument trinity continues.

Only time will tell. It is certain that there will be dozens of impassioned flame wars between the partisans on each side, with occasional shouts of "Zeiss! Zeiss!" from the gallery.

Those people will be caught, then drawn and quartered, and there will be a temporary truce between the Canons and the Sigmas.

while i do love my sigma 35 f/1.4, the auto focus has been particularly annoying lately...

This thread will be relevant once the 35 II is actually released (or at least announced with some MTF charts to look at). Until then, it is just a waste of bits.

I am thinking of buying 35L. The possibility of 35L II availability next year or so holds me back.

The question is, buy 35L or not to buy.
